Its appears that for most Microsoft downloads, they are checking to see whether the version of Windows used is genuine...

I have a legal version of windows xp but I customized the login screen and I tried to install service pack 2 and it said it didn't recognize ntoskrnl.exe or whatever and I was like, "Fine, I didn't want your crappy, security-flawed, lame ass excuse for an upgrade anyway..."

Actually that upgrade was to fix their crappy, security-flawed, lame excuse for an os. It runs quiet nicly with sp2.

io have heard nothign good of the sp2. infact everyone i know says its bad so im not getting it. and also all microsoft update style downloads since xp came into fashion have been sneaking into your pc to see if you are a pirate or not. 'swhy i don't download updates of m$ incase they find something out of date or that they claim is pirated. damn m$ and their stranglehold on our society. curse them i say.

I've been running SP2 since the day it came out and haven't had a problem with it.

Well i have SP2, not willingly though. What happened was i formatted, and when it was time for a reinstall, i couldn't find my disc. Went to WalMART as it was the only place open at 3am, and the only discs they have are SP2 ones. So yeah, i run SP2, and it isn't very bad. Had a couple errors with my Radeon card at first, but now its all happy go lucky.

Really does fix the OS

It works...but it's sooo slooow (2.8Mhz machine, before anybody asks). Fortunately, you can switch off rounded corners and flowers on the dashboard to speed it up.

now if only there was some way to get the (voluntary) check to tell em you where running Debian Linux,, that would confuse the posterior off them (like why are you installing sp2 on Linux?? roflmao)

Speaking of WindowsXP updates, does anyone have the latest Windows Media Player 10?

I have and I have to admit that the interface sucks. The only thing that is good about it is that it still works with WindowsXP Plus! Digital Media Edition.

RightClick My Computer>>Properties>>Advanced>> Performance-Settings>> Click "Adjust for Best Performance".

Heh heh, I read this post, and the next day my friend walks up to me and says, "Microsoft killed my computer because my dad's a pirate." I asked him if that meant he wasn't using a legal copy of Windows, he said yes, and I laughed at him. He can't even boot up.

Hmmmmm well my Windows XP is on a blank CD....

The windows Updates tend to kill it.

I might see what SP2 does.

mine conects to the internet all the time, and why does it need it, to download album info (insert an album and when you go to rip you can get all the song tracks), to use its "guide" feature and to buy music from website from within media player. so it does use the internet for a reason
