im using 3dsmax 4 but its pretty pricey.. you can get milkshape3d demo which only lasts for like 30 days. I think there is one called doga or something.. and 3d canvas that might be free i dunno. GOD knows how the hell anim8tor works..(of course i only use it to convert files).

For me that was enough to know what it can do...And there's nothing much it can't do compared to Max for character modeling...I mean.....Between 20$ and 2000$ there's no dilemma.

Milkshape is easily the best program for low-poly modelling and amimating imho. Yes 3d canvas and anim8r are free but I never managed to make anything really worthwhile with them.

I have demo versions of 3dsmax 5, Lightwave and Maya, all of which are expensive, utpersonally I still prefer Milkshape for this purpose

As far as I am aware, Gmax only works if you add a pack on for eaxh specific game, and I haven't seen one that outputs to x. Imight be wrong on that tho

I use anim8or, but then I'm hardly a modeller. Used it because it's FREE! And also quite a small download. You can export to .3ds, and then use the convertor which comes with DB to convert it to .x.

Oh yeah, I've also used Doga L1, but you don't have a particularly good range of abilities with that, it's alright for producing pre-made spaceships in a small time. Some licensing issues as well, and also the .x files exported don't have uv data.

Well i dunno i couldnt figure out milkshape3d.. and my stupid ass turned the clock back to test to see if it would reset the demo time..and it like screwed the whole thing up so i cant use it unless i buy it LOL I dunno.. would you think its piracy for sharing 3dsmax 1.2 i mean its so Old and its by a seperate company i dont think they are even making any money off of it. I have a copy of it 4mb if anyone wants it. I think it should be more considered as a demo for the higher versions..so i think its ok to give out that. even though its old it still works as good as the other versions minus the UV mapping which can be done in other progs.

if the clock screwed milkshape up, then turn the clock back to the original time, it'll work

I think MS has a time change protection so the program doesn't work after the clock has been altered.Never tried it so i may be wrong but I think I recall reading that.

Yeah the Milkshape program is stupidly good at telling if you've tried to f*ck with is and cutting you out. There are keygens which appear to work but even though you get no error message after a while it vuts your save function! Kinda annoying as I was only tryin 2 hack if for 14 days b4 my pay day b4 I bought it! Got it now and its a nice bit'a kit
