Hi
I got this by email the other day. If I understand rightly, they want my permission to put my games onto a CD of programs and games and sell them in Poland. All the games on my site are freeware anyway so I don’t really mind letting them use them, and even though they are selling the CD’s, it’s still free publicity for me I suppose, so I don’t mind that either. And they say they wouldn’t be making much profit from it. All my games have my name and website somewhere in them too. I was just wondering if anyone else has got a similar email, and if anyone knows if it is genuine…I might ask for them to send a copy of the ‘CD magazine’ to me so I can see what it’s like.

Dear Ladies and Gentelman

http://www.thegameszone.tk/

We request your permission to publish your programmes (freeware and shareware) on our editorial CD-ROMs. Our priority is to propagate shareware, freeware, public domain, etc. software. To keep up with the 21 century, all our magazines will be published in the electronic version (on CD-ROMs without unnecessary paper binding) but will be packed exclusively (DVD BOX) to show that such programmes deserve potential users' respect and satisfaction.
Keeping in mind the idea of shareware, our company is a non-profit organisation. We will charge our users only for searching, developing and distributing programmes. We have calculated that the amount of USD 1.99 for a retail customer will be satisfactory both for him and for our editorial board. However, USD 1.10 from each copy sold goes for distribution and statutory taxes obligatory in Poland, and USD 0.40 from each copy sold must be enough for us (it costs approx. USD 0.50 to produce one copy of the magazine). We hope to sell roughly 15.000 copies a month, so there is not too much to maintain our editorial staff (4 persons). We intend to pass all unsold copies to schools to enhance the standard of culture and education for students aged 7-15 year.

To the end of Decemer '04 we run our WWW service at: www.SuperPC.pl

PS. We are from POLAND.

SuperPC and GameArena team.

what do you think?

Sounds suspicious. Poland is convinient, makes it difficult to check up on the legitimacy of their project . On the other hand, if it's freeware, the only thing you have to be careful about is that they do in fact give you credit.

I think it sounds very suspicous. A professional company would not do this:
Quote: "PS. We are from POLAND."

And the donating unsold copies to schools also sounds suspicious, I think they said it to make you think they are generous, and make you think they are "good people."

I don't know, those are just my initial thoughts. If it was professional, you think they could get someone to translate to better English.

hey what you gotta do is put watermarks in your programs before you even consider because they can say you stole it from them if they decide not to give you credit

If your games
Quote: "All my games have my name and website somewhere in them too (and) All the games on my site are freeware anyway "

then why not?
Like you said its free publicity, just tell them that you want to get a free subscription to the mag for the life of the mag so you can get a little something out of it.

I would guess they are telling the truth. Why go to all the effort of emailing people to get permission if you where not going to do what you where asking permission for?

I would quickly put a line in the game credits or something saying like "if you paid money for this game, please contact me@email.com" or something like that

lol The .tk address is mine (www.thegameszone.tk), not the polish companys. Their address is www.SuperPC.pl although they said the website will be up in december

Thanks for all the advice - I’ve decided to let them use my games – just sent them an email. I asked a lot of questions about the CD magazine too and if they could send me a copy of the CD when it’s finished.

Just got back an email from them:

We are planning to publsh SuperPC 25.11.2004 (next number 02.01.2005 and then every month) so we can make our first Cover CD to 10.11.2004. If the game will be on the WW site to 07.11.2004 we can publish it in the first number. If not, it's no problem... Will be in the 2'nd number. (we are send You both magazins). Our magazins will be sold only in POLAND ( 40 milion of people and 8 milion computers) in markets with papers and other magazines (15.000 markets)

Best Regards

SuperPC and GameArena team.

I'm going to send them my home address to post the magazine too

It's such a terrible shame these days, that we have to treat everything with suspition.
I'm 75 and I feel so sad about it all.
Perhaps evolution will eventualy put eyes in the back of our heads.

you didn't take into account family sizes

but if you do that you'd also have to take into account how many computers are in one home
