Took a break from game programming so decided to code a fish tank because my other half wants fish but would rather spend the money on the baby now that she is pregnant.

Looking pretty good .

Congrats, by the way!

Little note-- you might want to make the fishtank wider than it is tall, either to fit a 4:3 aspect ratio or to be sized as fishtanks usually are.

I've heard fish grow to the size of the tank. Leaving them very small if they have not enough room to swim about. Someone not long ago told me that fish are more intelligent than you think. Not sure what that was about, but I knew he kept some fish!

At present it houses a fish that moves around randomly - it decides if it was to adjust it's direction every few seconds. And it has air bubbles that float to the top of the water in the background.

Other than that, not much at the moment lol. I have about 30+ models for different aquatic life. The program has been coded so that multiple fish can be kept, allowing them to grow - so I will incorporate a feed option. Will probably age the fish and put them at risk to things like fin rot if they aren't looked after. I'll probably make it so that if you introduce something like a shark into the tank then it will eat the other fish.

P.S. - Will make tank wider.

ha ha the thought of introducing a shark to your little goldfish that you've been looking after for the past 3 months is really amusing!

OK, you should be able to download what I have more or less so far:

http://yogz.freeserverhost.com/

And here is a clip after I changed the fish values to include 20 Neon Tetra instead of 2 Black Moor:

Ah, runtime error is probably because I used absolute paths in the code.....then again, I'm not sure. Try placing it in a directory called c:\FishTank and see if that makes a difference.

no beans dude; there was no media along with the exe...

it doesn't crash right away. the screen flickers a few times (black, blue, black) then it crashes.

I've uploaded it again - this time is the source, 3 textures and 1 model + it's texture. It is a zip file, approx 5 MB and should retain it's directory structure when unzipped, therefore files will be:

c:\FishTank\

Can be downloaded by clicking on my Web button and then selecting Fish Tank from the rollover menu.

Dude, you don't need to use absolute paths. You can save the end user trouble by putting this in your code:

"\Data\yourfilehere.abc" (Put a data folder in your project folder)

Instead of:

"C:\Fishtank\Data\yourfilehere.abc"

It just doesn't make sense to use absolute paths.

The absolute path thing I was aware of - it's because I wrote 50% of the code before I bothered to save it in it's own directory with models and stuff - so had to reference them in the code. Have corrected that so the path is now relative.

I've uploaded the zip again incase it was corrupted during my first upload. If it fails this time, then I'll upload each file separate and see if that works.

Odd, if you're running the source then it should tell you when there's an error and what it is likely to be. It was written in DB not DB Pro, not sure if that will make a difference. Make sure that the source and textures are in the root folder, and that the NeonTetra.x and NeonTetra.bmp (or similar) are in a Models/ folder.

Other than that, there must be some compatability error with the code and your hardware. I'll stick the source here, that way some boffin might be able to figure it.

one thing you should change is the camera angle.
It would be nice if the camera was closer to the fish tank.
Right now its too far away.
maybe you could make that in a update.

But the coolest could be if you made it so you could control the camera IN the fish tank Then you could see it much better and it would be more funnie.
and made it so if you hit the class then just a simple collision it could be VERY cool.

Some serious suggestions:

Add in blurred plain in the background to simulate events outside of the fishtank... just take a photo of a room and blur it a lot... the plain blue makes it look very... computer generated.

The fish look great!

Maybe make the floor of the fishtank a matrix?

Good, a good concept too! Congratulations on your better half.

K, have added a half decent room (pictures grabbed from somewhere random on the net). Also using a matrix for the gravel. Have started to code the personality traits into the fish.

Here's an outside tank view:

yogz, if you don't mind i'd like to try and make a few models for the tank. just specify how you want them (X, 3ds, ms3d, etc.). this project of yours has inspired me to try and do something similar... an iguana terrarium (maybe)

Oooooooooo iguana terrarium would be cool, I have an iguana! I let her out a few hours a day and she crawls onto the radiator and watches traffic through the window. If you want to make fishy models make .3DS or .x, it would be really helpful if they were textured too. The ones I have been using are from a free for non-commercial use site. I was thinking of doing lizards, rodents or arachnids next.

i altered Yogz code a slight bit so i could run it in DBPro (and have a free-roam camera). you will still have to download everything else from his site (media etc.) and paste this code in.

***THIS IS NOT MY CODE, 99.999% OF IT BELONGS TO YOGZ AND IT IS AN OLDER VERSION THAN HE CURRENTLY HAS FOR DOWNLOAD.***

Yogz, hope you don't mind me reposting your code. as for the models, i'll start cranking them out, textured and animated, and post them here as i progress.

Hi, great work. How did you make the plants? Is that transparency in the leaves? or is it all model?

I started work on a fish tank 6 months ago and didn't finish it. Good to see that you are so advanced into this. I was going to add characteristics to the water like temperature, nitrates, Ph, age of the water, etc and the fish would get sick or stressed out depending on that. Hope you will implement that on your fishtank.

Here is pic of mine

Take care

Looks pretty good and a lot better then those cheapo fish tank screensavers you can get.

Quote: ""fish are more intelligent than you think""

I saw something on tv a while back about how some scientists had proved goldfish actually have pretty good memories, something to do with food and going to the right place in the tank, can't really remember.

The tank is looking nice! My only complaint is the strange flat image on the one side of the tank. I think you should remove that. Otherwise, it's pretty good.

Been busy with relatives over here from Ireland. The models are from 3dcafe. They have been optimized in 3DS Max to reduce their polycount. Coloured in random shades of green and then placed in the tank. The glass is made of blue coloured boxes that have been ghosted. The flat image in the tank is a standard fish tank backdrop. The images outside the fishtank were entered as a suggestion by another DB User. I won't be releasing a DB Pro version as I do not as yet have DB Pro. Anyone can feel free to make whatever changes they like to the code - bearing in mind that the models are ALL free for non-commercial use.

jwurmz - I'll check the models out over the next few days when I get the chance.

Thanks
