gah- to many threads where people are recommending books!!!
http://www.gametutorials.com is great and it has its own IRC channel.

it has bitesize step-by-step tutorials that teach you EVERYTHING. I was on massively step learning curve until the pc died and i havent had time to continue since then. check it out. its GREAT so quit getting books and stuff. books are old fassioned and a waste of paper AND MONEY so get with the times doodz.

Looks good, though I can mostly see Direct X tutorials etc. I'm guessing you are taking about those under Game Tutorials the console text adventures to the final 2d game?
