I am making a game called dragonball Gt Ultimate Challenge its called that because it's kind of like a yu-gi-oh rip off where you fight with dbz characters instead of monsters....i also created my own style of gameplay and rules so that its similar but not quite the same to yu-gi....oh and its nothing like the dbz tcg on the gba that was really, well boring...

When A card is used the player will see an animation i.e. spirit bomb or kame hame ha... as the cards do battle...its actually more like a turn based rpg battle game but using cards to make it more exciting because they are drawn at random...

If this game catches on..I'll do a 3d version...cause i'm working hard at my modelling skills too..3d would be awesom but i'm sticking to 2d for now....

Here is a screen from my dragonball gt game

and a sample of the sprite special fx,

still working on the in game graphics, I can't make my mind up on the user interface, cause i want it to be easy, fun and simple, so no screens yet but i do have some other character pics on my site
( http://www.lascerus.com )
that'll feature in the game....(i didnt put them i here cause it might have been too big to dl)
Incase you're wondering it's none commercial, so no legal issues, i did most of the images for my game and if i want to go commercial a license is in the bag .....

oh yea the quality is poor because i wanted it to make it easier to download...

Just cos it's not commercial, doesn't mean no legal issues... it just means you're a lot less likely to be noticed by legal people. I'm not saying DB people are likely to send you a cease & decist order, but they can if they want (DBZ: Bid for Power? Free but c&d'd. Chrono Trigger: Ressurection? Free, but c&d'd)

That aside... not really much to comment on can't really say much on the pics as they're just pics from GT and all...
Good luck anyhoo, a card based battle sounds pretty good, somewhat like... that RPG DBZ had on snes I think? That was kinda interesting...

interesting concept.. my brother would like this game; his two favourite things in one place

that said, i'll echo Tifu. be careful about not being told to Cease&Desist.

if your in s.africa, then there is a chance that legally; the companies that own the copyright can't touch you but just in-case, try not to get to attached to the project.

OR.. just rename it to something else and just mention in passing that you really like the program it was based on! (never admit it was based on it)

ahhhhhhh turns out the license was a tv one and even if its free i can still be sued for R500 000 and they can claim my game, <sigh> too bad it was looking good...Good thing I had wo more concepts that this'll work on, not to mention they're mine, so...it'll take time to make the media...i'll stay posted.

WAIT! If you contact the people who own the liscences and tell them that the game you are desiging is free of charge they could let you make it.

Bid for Power did well by changing character names and looks.
You can still make it obviously DBZ/GT based, provided you make sure that no characters are recognisable.

You can release a 'character pack' later 3rd party provided you code in a hack to allow people to change the characters.

there is always a way around the evil empires of the world

Haha, I doubt they'd actually sue you.
What they'd do is, if they even noticed your game, issue a cease and decist order. If after receiving that, you just ignored them, THEN they'd sue you, but I really doubt... whoeverownsit... would sue you for a little fangame without ample warning. Think of the bad press they'd get ;D
You would be given ample warning before legal action would be taken, if any were to be taken at all. I've had DBZ games on my site for a couple years, no ones noticed... whether that's a good thing or not...

haha, you wouldn't be able to sell it to them XP for one they seem to be retarded, apparently they were going to allow Bid for Power to be created... so long as it was made so that it could be put on the CN website... 3D quake engine... CN website... don't think they'd be compatible Mr. Funimation people! *slap*
Likewise, I doubt your DB code would translate well to GBA
