It seems nowadays just about everyone has their own website. I've been so busy focussing on learning programming, modellers, skinners, 2D editors, trackers and the likes that I have absolutely no idea how to make one of my own.

I understand a few basic concepts:
1) If I want my own website name I'll have to buy the domain name...
2) I am going to need server space which (I assume) has two properties space and bandwidth.

So I'm aware that if I want a professional looking website I will have to rent some server space and a domain name. So now for my questions:

1) Do you have any advice when looking for servers. From what I gather there are many different features that are offered which vary the prices. For example, some server providers I heard (for shareware) were offering to also handle financial transactions.

2) I would rather avoid learning something like html or php at the moment. Seeing as there are still tons of things I'd like to improve my talents in other than website creation, and I don't need to have the fanciest website, what would you suggest I use. Perhaps something that I could use before renting a server so that I could set it all up until I have some things I need to put up for download.

3) What basic principle's do I need to understand? Seeing as my primary focus since I started this has been on making the games, I know relatively little about internet stuff. It seems pretty confusing to me right now, so some helpful advice on where to start would be greatly appreciated.

Personally I recommend http://www.vapournet.com. My site was built entirely using point and click tools provided with the hosting.

I should also mention that they are officially a sponsor of mine, however their rates are extremely favourably priced compared to every other professional hosting solution i've seen.

They tend to get overlooked around here because they charge for their hosting, but there is a reason for that and it's worth every penny.

Their prices start at £12 for year and the package you get for that is pretty damned good.


Which is the biggest tool? The computer, or the muppet who invented it?

I would recomend HTML(easy) and PHP(a bit harder).
PHP uses HTML and compiles web pages.
After you learn HTML, you should learn Java and JavaScript.
I would recomend you get PHPDev 5 before you buy a web host.
You should also use MySQL along with PHP.
Download PHPMyAdmin for MySQL.
AceHTML Freeware and WebDwarf(also freeware) are good things to download.
Space should be at least 100mb and bandwidth 4g.
Space is how much space you have and bandwidth is how much users have downloaded from your website.
Downloading includes any transaction with your website.
Try to get a server with a lot of uptime and a good rep.
Use google to find a host search page with comments.
A website is like your harddrive.
Any file that returns HTML is opened in the browesr.
Any file that the browser supports is the same.
Otherwize, it's downloaded.

Learn.. PHP, yes, and HTML, yes, as all covered by Ilya.

Just get a nice free server like me. Free servers are fine if you aren't some group, that has a profit, or if you don't make a profit, go with free for now.

It has hundreds of free scripts, including e-commerce. Their community is awsoeme, and they are cheap. (3gb of space for $6 a month! also 50gb of data transfer)
They are sweet. I am currently building my teams web site on it.

Some times ago yes. I used it too. But they have a new restriction : downloading archive files over 500kb is not allowed. So people can not download my DarkBASIC programs.

Let me clarify my position a little. While you may think I am getting ahead of myself (my ignorance in the above post may lead you to believe I am a know-nothing noob), I currently organizing a project I am going to make shareware. While I am completely aware I will need another financial service that isn't really my main concern at the moment. I am just doing some research so that I will be ready when the time comes to build and set up my website when the program rolls around to alpha or beta, or even finished.

While I could learn HTML, JAVA or PHP they are really overkill for what I need. I am happy with mostly point and click stuff so (I hope I phrase this right) I am really looking more towards a wysiwyg editor of sorts. And, most importantly, one I can register my own domain name and keep detatched from the company that allows me to do this. i.e. geocities not an option.

u dont have to buy a domain u can get .tk for free it depends if u want a .com or what if u want a .tk type in www.and what u want to call your site.tk and they will tell u if its there to use or some1 already useing it but u must have made your site be4 geting the .tk couse u need the url

Well, I have my own server for files like that.... The only reason I don't use my own server for random things like that, is I don't know what to put on it... So it only has a nice redirection PHP document on it to send it to my site, for a easier to remember domain then blah.blah.com...
