I have a wonderful innovation that will help the world. There are 2 things that I am worried about however: the costs and the public.

I want to start this somewhere. Where would I begin and how?

lol, in the US the best way to deal with it is to hire an attorney or seek help at your local job service.. They usually know what to do because they are the ones helping people find a way to become self sufficient

Since you're in Canada you should see if there's any similar services.

It's not a good idea to hire any online services for patenting

The sad thing is, there's thousands of great ideas, and they're all clogged up in the crud hole that is the patent system - it can take years to register a patent, and that's before you can safely 'pitch' it to companies.
