Check this out, watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade this coming Thursday, me and the rest of my high school's marching band will be marching down the parade route and doing a routine in front of the camera for you all--we're fifth in line.

I'm leaving early Monday morning for New York; see you all later, much packing to do!

Perhaps someone would care to explain thanksgiving to me. I have no idea what it is all about and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Is it a religous thing? or just an excuse for a day off work?
What happens?
Do you exchange gifts?
What's the story behind it, where did it originate?

Sorry if these sound like stupid questions but I bet there are a lot of non-Americans who would like to know the answers.

Thanks

Pricey

Basically way long ago when everybody sailed over to N. America from Europe they had this big dinner with the Native Americans and so every November we have a big dinner with turkey and such and think of all the things that we are grateful for. Usually families get together from across the country and everybody turns on the TV to watch the parade, w00t.

In reality there's a lot more to it, but that's the quick and dirty explanation. The best part is that there is huge amounts of food to be eaten.

Not just Americans. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving as well, but around the middle of October.

What do you play? Myself, I'm a percussionist.

I'll watch for you and the drummers. Be sure to write like "TGC Pwnz" on your head or something in permanent marker

Heh heh, I play alto sax. I would normally march naked with TGC advertisements painted all over my body, but I'm scared of my band director. His name is Mr. Haenfler, or as we like to call him Adolf Haenfler. We're the fifth band up, Highland High School from Gilbert, Arizona. When we finish our routine in front of the camera I'm the first alto sax from the front facing the camera (right behind a base clarinet, horizontally that is), I'm taller than most of them even though I'm frosh-w00t.

Thanks for your support guys!

The Pilgrims, wanting to get along with the Native Americans decided to throw a dinner party for them and as plenty of turkeys walked the earth in them there days, so turkey it was.
The invite's went out and all the local tribesmen promptly RSVP'ed.
The next day they all tucked in and had a smashing time and all were thankful for the wonderful feast (Thanksgiving).
when it was all over, everyone went home, the Pilgrims were pleased how good it all went and the Native Americans got sick and died of small pox, another gift from the Pilgrims.

Should this read: Dude, I bet you are an illegal immigrant from Scandinavia and do not know what Thanksgiving is, Go back to Zurich, punk.

First: I am from London, England. (if you know where that is)
Second: What do you have agaist poeple From Zurich.
Third: Zurich is in Switzerland which is not part of Scandinavia last time I checked.
Forth:The small pox thing is American history and I was just pointing out a fact.
And lastly: Why dont you ask your mom for a spell checker for Christmas, punk.

Thanksgiving was the day the white man decided to take a day off from the killing and raping of native americans and force them to sit at the table at gunpoint.

Now, it is a day in which we watch the parade for maybe 5 minutes , eat food and watch football.

Remember, Jimmy still loves you.

How many holidays does America have?

I only get Xmas and new years off, I have to use my holiday entitlement for any other days I want - I don't get bank holidays either. I get 32 days holiday a year or something like that, 33 if I go all year without a single sick day (wow).

It varies, depending where you work, like Veterans day is a federal holiday but I don't get it off, but my wife does, if you work for the US mail, you get more holidays than the Queen.

Bear Crazy Donut Productions.
No offence taken, hope you had a good day.

Major Payn.
I wasn't around when the pilgrims landed, I turned up some 200 and odd years later, smallpox free, but the pilgrims were settlers in New England and settlers came from all over Europe and later the Africa's.
As Thanksgiving (USA) by tradition always mentioned the pilgrims and New England I give you your point.

Anyway from me to all on the forum, Have a Happy Christmas.
