Im making a Space RTS, Title still pending (Need your 2 cents) along with some other advice on the direction of my game, casue I can't think very well. Anyway what I have is the primary engine completed to handle ship movement, attacking, death, FX, the works.

Heres some screenies to keep you interested.
- And yes, there clickable...

The basic idea is in the future Earth expands beyond the moon and begins to colonize Mars and its Moons for valuable resources, within a decade of development, a dozen or so Orbital Space Cities are setup as shipping ports back to Earth. As Earths natural resources deminish, they demand more and more export from the Mars Colonies. Mars cannot handle the almost impossible labor and refuses, no responce from Earth is heard for 6-months, as Earth passes Mars in its orbit a massive signature appears on radar. Earth has declared a military intervention and seizer of all Mining Operation on Mars. The colonists outraged, mobilize a demonstration fleet to open diplomatic lines and ask the Earth Directorate Fleet to return to Earth. Peace talks turn to bloodshed as the meeting explodes into a firefight. As Mars mobilizes for War your career begins.

So yeah, its based on the American Revolution, Im doing this as my Senior Project for school, my first plan was a RPG but that would have taken way too long.

So any questions/suggestions as I still have a long way to go. Im still deciding for a title because "Martian Revolution" sounds gay. And Im also brainstorming weather it should be squad based. Anyway post at ur leisure.

Think what you like, you'll all be mine in the end.

Thx guys!
Waggames - Of course, I do this for fun so everyone can enjoy, I'll have a demo out soon, since its practily full circle playable, and by practicly.. I mean that once you kill everything in Skirmish mode it doenst do anything . It will be pritty hefty tho, 30MB+, so SOL for u dial-up hobos , but I will try to compress.

Oh yeah, If anyone has some free time, I seriously need better ship models, mine I made in a hour with DOGA. Even a retexture would give the whole thing a facelift.

Also Im testing out a video editing program, perhaps ill make a demo clip!

Humm, very intersting suggestions, I was thinking something ambigous would be best. Like the name of a station.

Btw, whats Protecarate mean? lol

Keep posting whatever ideas pop into your head, no better minds then the DB community.

- Also Demo clip done... its just 80MB! Back to the cutting board...

hey! i'm working on a 3D RTS...you can't do it!

anyway it's kinda hard to tell from the screenies...but i was wondering if you have full 3D movement...or just movement on a "plain"

The fighters and small craft have full 3D movement, as for the capital ships, they have limited vertical movement, so that they dont suprass the tactical camera.

I was fooling around in skirmish mode and setup 30 Fighters vs 30 Fighters. Utter chaos, not to mention very laggy

No, you command on a XZ plain and the ships will automaticly climb on there own, mainly to avoid otherships, since freindly fire IS active.

Looks awesome, can't wait to try it out. It is amazing how different it looks from Homeworld though, considering they are both 3D space RTS games...

Is Mars in the background a picture on a skysphere or sky box, or is it a 3D object?

Nice work, keep it up

Heh there are a lot of space rts going around at the moment this one looks quite different from the one im working on though. I dunno what everyones facsination with moving in all plains is though I havnt seen very many good handling systems as of yet so no real point. Remember keep it simple stupid heh I love that saying.

the system i'm working on is almost exactly like homeworld...and they did it great

i was asking if he could move them in all plains so i could ask him a question about how he programmed it..but since he didn't do it that way i'll ahve to work it out on my own...

Your right that homeworld was a pretty good system if you really get into it and used to it and everything but for an action based rts its too slow and fiddly you really need to be able to move you ships around in split second fashion and handle multiple fleets at a time etc so to me its kinda no worth the hassle even to have the effect of realistic space battles.

Homeworld two had a better system...so you could move stuff even faster...

i'm hoping to improve on HomeWorld 2's system a little

Well if you think about it, modern warfare is not at all exciting, blasting eachother from miles away with guided missles, not very watchable. The way my ships engage eachother is more simular to WWII naval engagements. Carriers launching their fighters duking it out in the skys while the largers ships strafe rounds at eachother.

- Bolt: The enviroment is made up of 3 parts, 1) A starfield that sticks to the camera, 2) A starfield that sticks to the board, 3) 3 plains that are textured as Mars, Earth, the Sun that are always facing the camera. Oh an theres also the matrix with the hexagon grid. Most of the textures are pictures I found online so thats not my work

Video Clip finnishd, 15MBS, all I have to do now is upload it.

Ok, the lite2.avi runs on a Cinepak Codec by Radius

If you dont want to go find this you can download this:
http://www.psycho-technics.com/lite5.avi

This is a Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V2
8.9MBs | 2mins | 320x240x16 Res

lol stop bickering ive been working on my for years lol anyway im sure their all great as long as you dont steal ideas or anything. The movie was nice seems like some action packed battle although at the moment its probably quite limited can you actually collect resources or is that a feature your putting in??

Took me about 1-2 months on off over the course of 6 months. It was easier because I did a bunch of that I used before hand on little other projects. Like how to make decent menus was from my RPG.

Anyway, Next up in my barrage of promotion is a demo... once I finnish the closing menu and a few other loose strings, mabey a readme cause my GUI style isnt user friendly...

depends how you look at it. You can move around the terrain in X and Z axis, but if you consider walking up a hill and the changing of Y then yes I can move in all 3 direction.

Quote: "cause my GUI style isnt user friendly..."

you might not like this idea, but maybe you should change it. the interface is very important with gameplay. I've stopped playing what looked like great games just because I hate their interfaces so much.

Hummm... Yeah it curtainly is important.

Look at this screenshot of the Skirmmish menu

Do you think it would be easy for some one to figure out by themselves quickly? Like figure out how to:

-Add ships to your fleet
-Add ships to enemy's fleet
-Subtract Ships
-Change gametype
-Go back to the main menu
-Launch the skrimmish
