I had to endure a lot of really happy go lucky christmas tunes at work today, does anyone else find that they drive you crazy!? I have to say they really annoy me. Why do people like this kind of stuff?

Gir goes crazy and stuff?

I love Christmas songs, probably because it reminds of my childhood when I wasn't such a pathetic waste.

I'll be honest. We have 2 radio stations here in the Twin Cities that converted to "100% ALL CHRISTMAS MUSIC - ALL DAY - EVERY DAY" on November 20! That's even before Thanksgiving!

I don't get wrapped up in the commercialism at all. To me, that's all it is anymore.

i hate X-mas time full stop. X-mas is a christian festival to comemorate the birth of Jesus. I know if i was aChristian i'd find it extremely offensive that marketing takes advantage of their festivities.

I find it amusing that 9/10 athiests celebrate X-mas...

everyone celebrates Christmas in thier own way.
the commercialism actually comes less from the holiday based around the Birth of Jesus, and alot more around the German Priest St. Nicolas.

personally i don't find it offensive. garish, and gaudy perhaps.. but generally speaking i don't really get hyped about it past the fact that it's a time of year i get to eat my grandma's awesome cooking, sit infront of the TV watching movies, and stuff my face with candy ::cough:andalchyholcough:: til i feel perfusly ill.

that's what i see it as really, a time of the year to finally sit back and relax. cause the other 360days of it i'm going to be working like a dog

I hate to break this to you, but I'm sure thos 9/10 athiests don't go to xmas mass, or get those crappy jesus christmas movies, or celebrate jesus or god or anything like that. It's a holiday.. take it for what it is, a day off of work and a celebration that you're not dead yet.

@empty lol

For me stuff like "im dreaming of a white christmas" and stuff with a similar sound just iritates me especially when it has been on repeat for the last two hours(and everyone knows it only snows in february!), and i got annoyed the first time i heard it.

Was it written in the 50s? all that kiond of stuff annoyes me.

I mean i dont hate christmas, its just the music, too damn cheerful, life aint like that, i like being cheerful, i just dont like it shoved down my throat

I travel to work with a friend of mine. Stupidly I bought an MP3 sound system (bit old now, but is still 10 CDs worth) for my car. Really annoyingly my friend insisted on compiling a CD with quite a lot of Xmas songs on it. She then plays them all on the way to work. And nothing else. Now I love Xmas songs as much as the next man, but by the time Xmas actually gets here I think I will be gibbering uncontrollably with a bloody axe in my hands...... I'll give you a fecking white Xmas...

Cheers

I love Christmas songs, but when they start them in the middle of November, you start to get sick of them after a while. Pretty much it's the same songs over and over with just different artists performing. It's such a relief to get something new and unique every now and then.

I hate Christmas tunes, and the whole Christmas season!
All the children will dance and they'll sing without reason!

They'll sing Jingle Bells and Oh Christmas Tree!
And Joy to the World and We Three Kings!

Oh no, I can't stand it, the holiday sound,
I must stop christmas from coming... but how?

Christmas tunes get annoying when it's a choir of people just singing the same old. I enjoy Manheim Steamroller, and the jazz variations of popular Christmas tunes in particular.

Also that "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" stuff sang New York blues style is always great.

P.S. Where I come from it does't snow. Except in the North, where the snow schedule is ever changing. Could be November, could be March, could be January, or December, or none at all.

It´s not strange. Cristmas existed way before Jesus. I´m not joking. It was a mid winter fiesta used to take the blues away from the freezing cold horrible winters.
That´s why we celebrate xmas in december when Jesus was born mid summer.

Little known fact: Christmas has been moved many times, but the one known least about is that it was moved (don't know when) from around 15-20th of december to the 25th because, at the time, there was a pagan festival on the 25th. My mate Euan told me about this when his lecturer was talking about different ways to solve apparent problems. I think they found out that the cencus was actually mid-year at that time anyway, so we're way off these days as it is. Jesus would have been born in summer most likely. My info is hazy so don't hesitate to correct me so i don't look like a complete moron.

Here's an extract from a book if you can be bothered to read it. It's in the code.

i've never claimed jesus was born on Dec. 25th

that's just when we celebrate it...

and i don't find it strange at all that 9/10 Atheists "celebrate" Christmas...they aren't celebrating Jesus' birth...it's just a holiday to them...

@Darwin
stupid KOZY...
I don't know whether it makes christmas more merry or more tiresome when they start that early. But when I heard Christmas tunes right after Halloween...(*sigh*)Then to make it seem not as commercial, they play that Charlie Brown Christmas clip every other song. how do I know this? My mom loves to listen to that station.

Does Jingle Bell Rock annoy anyone else but me? I find that and all the 'modern'(though theyre 30+ years old) christmas tunes are too much overplayed..

And 'Im Dreaming of a White Christmas' is ambiguously KKK O_o

Pagen holiday your thinking about is Solstis, held on the 20th of December, denoting the end of the Harvest Season (Autumn) and the start of Winter.

DivW, i think you'll find that alot of the information on the subject is conjective... mainly because each religion believes they are the only one. When you cross-search all of them you end up with a scarey amount of events and people named differently but playing the same roles in roughly the same periods of history.
All of, which are considered mythical; with the exception of Christianity. As they have the 'Holy' Book to take source from.

I'll try and find the relating passages later and scientific data to explain a few things. The Bible at times is quite oddly accurate with certain things, especially when cross-checked with historic documents of the 'supposide' time.
