Hey i was just thinking how hard is it to run my own server.

1.)What will i need
2.)How much will it cost
3.)What will i have to do
4.)What programming skills do i need to know

well servers are difficult to set up

you'll need a computer with a very decent spec - 2/3ghz
you'll need a keyboard, montior and mouse for it (or a kvm switch)
you'll need a massive connection speed (1meg)

how much will it cost, well basically its a new comp with high speed broadband, then you'll have to leave it on 24/7 which uses a hell of lot of electricity

what will you have to do - install something like apache

what programming skills - none to set it up, unless you want to write a server, but then you would be mad

to sum up

new comp
high speeed broadband
alot of money to pay for the above and of course the electricity
time to set the server up so that it is secure - ie no one can hack you

I have just got a new comp 3ghz .... Im getting broad band and i dont have to worry about electricity.

But you cant really use the PC as normal, You have to practically leave it to run, so no programming / gaming / surfing on the machine.

Not really, if you compare it to amount of electricity electric heaters use. Not that its relevant

having a computer on uses alot of electricity - i should know mines on for around 10 hours at weekends and 5 on week days

I run my own server. i don't have that kind of stuff I program and (don't play games on it) use it as a server http://marcusoftware.zapto.org might not work so try http://67.41.146.93 works and I am using that computer not like full time but I use it sometimes.

I've got a nice small little Linux server under my desk, I had to put that old computer to use...

It seems to work ok.. I don't really know anything top put at the website though.... So there is a stupid page there right now, and some redirection pages to make a web address shorter.

you dont need a super computer to run a server..

You can run a damn fine server on even a 386. You need more power the more hits you get, and more power if you use processor hungry apps like php or other script languages.

I wouldn't run 2000 on a 386, but linux runs beautifully.

I was thinking more about having it running php and and many hits, and to be honest i thought he was going to use it for other people to host on. Generally when i talk about servers i'm usually thinking about installing max on them and make a render farm for a basic max render farm node you need at least a 2ghz processor, preferable higher

My server got a 500mhz pent 3 proc... Then again, almost nobody goes to my server, because there are no websites on it... Just redirection pages. onlay 94.. or is it 96.. mb of RAM on it, etc. And this is what I used to use...

remove the service (usually a command line option), then delete the phpdev.ini out of your windows folder, then the phpdev directory - just make sure that it isn't running when you do it, if you get any file access denied errors, just reboot
