Hi all,

Just finished uploading 19 new skyboxes. The theme is "stormy skies". Enjoy, and feedback always appreciated...

Wow, Cluless. Some of those (edit: now that I've seen some more, allow me to refrase: Many of those) look really good! I espetially like the Maritime boxes. The others seem to be missing something (like something below the skies ). How about putting some mountains or buildings? I'm sure you could make some great night scenes with tall, distant buildings with lights on. I'm looking forward to the planet textures, when will they be up?

Thanks much for the kind words on the boxes and you're right about something missing, but it's actually by design (isn't that what we programmers are always supposed to say?

Seriously though, sky-only seems to be the preferred way to go, then people add whatever they want in the foregrounds. Going the other way, like, for example, putting big tall buildings in one of those stormy sky boxes, would straight off make it useless to somebody wanting a stormy sky for a naval battle being fought on a stormy ocean (at least, until they invent floating cities)

I *have* been outputting matching terrains on some of these things, saving them as .X objects that have matching textures. So we could have the best of both worlds with the skyboxes then -- sky only for those who want it, or mountains/trees/buildings/whatever as a true 3D object around the sides of the box. I babble on incessently about this in the "40 free skybox " thread and there are some screenies in there. It's still a work-in-progress though.

I think sometime late tonight (11 Dec) or early Sunday morning (I'm in eastern time zone in USA, I think same as you down there in Rio). Definitely this weekend, barring major disaster.

Generate them with Texturemaker for example.

Sure thing Goldorack. In sincerely hope to release some before the weekend is over. Below are some hot-off-the-press previews of the box in my second solar system.

Everything you see behind the planets is a starbox with mapped nebula, galaxies, novas, etc. Please also check out this thread for a couple of screenies of my first solar system:
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=43799&b=1

Apologies to the forum if these preview images are too big. I low-rez'd them so they'd load fast but i'm not sure how big is too big before it gets annoying

That small image in the upper right corner is "video transmission" from a probe sent down to the earth-like looking planet in one of these shots.

Hi Peter,

Quote: "could you put them all in one download please?"

I hope to do that eventually, but right now am trying really hard to stay under disk quota on my web site. They're only giving me 200MB and I've got over 100MB of skyboxes, so if I built one big archive it would pretty much equal my whole quota.

I'm waiting on word from an ISP a friend recommended, Nevidia (anyone know them or have a favorite?). If I go with them I'll get 2GB, which will make it much easier for me.

Skybox textures are built with Bryce (Nice call Mouse! You definitely know your software )

The "starboxes" are a combination of Bryce, Adobe Photoshop/Flaming Pear output, and some NASA imagery. I'm trying to limit the NASA stuff though, so I am more motivated to do my own.

The Flaming Pear software is wonderful. I've created all kinds of useful space graphics with their solarcell and other plugins for PSP8.

Clueless, its really very generous of you to make all these skyboxes available. Thanks very much. I don't suppose you'd have a Christmas themed skybox? I've got a use for it in Manamana: Reloaded!

There are a few snowy themese in there but if you had a particular type of sky in mind I'm sure I could whip something together quickly. It only takes 2-3 minutes per skybox.

The "starbox" in my first release of planets
http://www.alsip.net/gamedev/media/planets/index.html

might pass as Christmasy, there's a big bright star in there that looks like something from the 3 wise men chasing through the desert. (of course, there's a big nebula there but the images on the starbox walls are somewhat interchangeable, just copy image 6 over the nebula and blur any edges in PS.

@Clueless

I was thinking more of a worldbox which shows snow everywhere and snowy Xmas trees, etc.
