AlSO WANT TO MAKE rpg would this be the best program starting out. another reason is because it is cheap $20. I really want to get into game design and have already planned a simple 3d rpg on paper. And if i got stuck we always have the forums . I want to know more on ideas to make a game like gta 3 and could someone help me with 3d models and everything someone help me on this idea.

i would suggest before u embark on any game is to make a folder and test and learn each command by actually typing out the programs, cut n paste wont teach you the commands.

each command you know adds one more tool to your arsenal in solving problems.

starting a game and then having to rewrite it again because you learnt a new way of doing something is painfull and can be avoided.

Start with some basic commands and then slowly move onto to larger concepts.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself

u cant start by making a game like GTA, i bet half the ppl here cant even get close (no offence!) , but to do that u need to know commands and stuff, start off making little things.. each based on one or two different commands, till u know them well... then maybe when ur rly advenced u could learn.....

[edit]
make a pong game everyone makes them first heheh

You want to start small and work your way up?

-Make a matrix
-make lots of boxes to resemble a city
-import a few car models and place them infront of a few of the buildings.
-create a character cube
-lock camera to be 3rd person view
-Give your character controls (simple stuff: forward, back, left, right)

Going up to a harder level..:

-Make your cars be able to move on their own. I would say around a block infinite times
-Add in some sounds and lock it to the cars so u only here the sounds when they drive by.
-Apply textures to your building to give it the city look.
-Switch out your character to a real .X character with animations to follow your contols.
-Texture the matrix to match city streets.
-Import a few human models that stand on the side walks and for now do nothing more

Now that isnt the hardest thing to acomplish right there. Will take some time for you to get it all covered but i think you might be able to handle it. The menu comes last so dont make one till your done with your game.

good luck..

Why don't you try with the style of the first two GTAs and work from there?

Working with cubes might be a good start. I actually used cubes for a sort of Pipemania clone only involving a car with a stuck accelerator trying to avoid a corrupt cop. I stopped because I questioned whether anyone would actually bother playing it.

Why does everyone come here and straight away expect to make something incredible? I don't know how many people have said this before or will say it again; start off small!!!

like I said im new at programmming i got dbc for x-mas and if I fix the system error on it. Yeah im going to start out cubes and cars ruuning around the street but the city will be one or two blocks and circle around. Then I will start adding people, as i PROGRESS i will give the people AI so they can talk and do things.I will start out with one gun like a ak47.ADD sound give the people voices ,cars. But it sems sort of hard to program but after a week or two I should get use to it.

It is incredibly easy to start a game, but the same cannot be said about finishing a game

Start with pong or breakout or a simple space invaders clone. This will get you used to game logic and how everything should be put together. You can basicly apply the same logic to any game you make. Plan everything out before you do it. If there is anything you are unsure about ask on the forums.

omg i wanna meik a ffx2 game lyk wit 3d charactrz n ppl and u can talk and fight and ther will b a big wrld that u can connect with a servr and special effectz n sound n lotz of enemies can any1 hlp me wit modelz n code.... GIMME TEH CODEZ!!!!

... not to sound rude XD... but hey, a GTA 3 is a BIG game, isn't as small as you think it is. Personally, if you still want to do it regardless of our opinions, follow F50Z3N FLAM3's instructions, it will also help you in learning. A -simple- yet nice game is Limit Rush, follow that one tutorial also, it will teach everything you need for making a game. Also, it will teach you inercia, gravity, speed, how to texture a matrix, place objects and such, the basic stuff you might need for starting something for your GTA.

Also, no offense, but you're sounding like if you -want- the 3D models and such instead of help. Help in those matters isn't that you tell people to make the models for you, unless you find yourself someone who wants (I'm not saying that there aren't) to do them for you. You must do something also, I mean, you can code and such, but ysometimes you gotta make your own models, or find them free in the internet.

Hope to have helped...

It's that time of year again........

I know it sounds like we're all putting people down and such for wanting to start large projects, but the fact is most people here have attempted something at a similar scale, realized how incredibly difficult it is, and are trying to pass on advice to make your programming adventure that much smoother.

@ Mr Pointless : That was the first thing i did in darkbasic - just changing things so if you pressed keys then it changed the textures, and so you could go faster, or go backwards... all that sort of rubbish

About 2 years on, I still haven't progressed much further [img][/img]

Now I have Pro I'm working on a sort of 360 dergees Space Invaders style game: Attack of the Zombie Mutant B*****ds from Outer Space. It's not much of a step but it's a step nonetheless. Just hope no-one's already used that title.

I was thinking more along the lines of the title being used for a shareware game. My game's going to be freeware, anyway.

I only read the first couple posts here, but if you want to make a Rpg and you don't have any experience your best option is a program called RPG Maker. Its free and very easy to use, and to tell the truth the best game I ever made was with RPG maker, but my old computer that I had, messed up and the game was lost. You should defintly check it, because its also free and I think there's a new version out then the one I was using.

try this code, it will only work with db though.

That should work.

You might wanna think about adding a syncrate command, just to be safe.

Look in the codebase, or the dbc documentation, it has some excellent examples.

Isn't it? Wasn't it? Marvellous!

Wanting to make a game like GTA is a great dream...Hold on to it, but don't even attempt to make that game right now. Start out smaller and learn the language.

Ooo, you're starting programming just now? No problem, just don't expect to get really good until you're like, 20 years old.

As everyone has said, start by loading the examples and tutorials. Go through the source code and try to see how things are done. Everyone needs a goal to aim for, but yours is a little high for the time being. If you got a piano for Christmas and had never played before, would you be able to compose a symphony in 2 weeks? No, its the same with game writing.
Use your newly created cube and try moving it with the cursor keys. Then add a sphere and have its colour change when the cube touches it. Keep adding objects and commands until you know it well enough to turn it into a game. The examples and help files really are your best friend.

Even though it will take a long time to master and seem difficult, stick with it. When you impress your mates with your first game, it will all seem worth it.

Ya like anything you cant just walk up and expect to be a master...It takes time and determination before you will get anywhere but it is worth it in the long run if this kind of thing is designed for you.

Brad,

I have attached to this post source code of a 3D pong game I have created for you to study, if you wish. I have placed plenty of comments within the code which explains what each section is accomplishing. I believe it will help teach you a few fundamentals of the DarkBasic language to get you on your feet in the creation of 3D games within DarkBasic.

Though, I do not wish for you to get stuck on their usage, I have used DarkBasic's commands to test for collision of objects. Rather, I do hope that you will take time to experiment with math collision, knowing that it can be more efficient. Also, it helps you build your skills for if you ever wish to program games in other languages which do not carry such features as DarkBasic does.
