Well, I think this is just about ready for a WIP post - GT Power Racer:

Very early days, as you can see. It's a racing game on water. Unlike most previous boat racing games, though, this uses proper wave physics rather than just texture effects on planes, so you actually feel like you're on water as you go through the waves. With the basic physics engine already built, the big areas to work on are the modelling and texturing, and the AI for the opponents.

The idea is going to be like Grand Tourismo, in that you win races to buy better crafts and upgrades.

I'll release a demo a little further down the line.

Ric.

p.s. still trying to get a team together - anyone interested please see http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=44564&b=9 So far it's just me and F50Z3N FLAM3 who modelled the boat

Looking good. You might need to change your logos to "Pepso" and "Cola-Cola" before you're hunted down and chastised

That's quite true - although one day, if the game gets good enough, they may pay me to include their logos!

Played around with the water appearance a bit. This screen shows the dynamic wave effect quite well :

I'll probably put a demo up sometime in January once I'm a bit further with the AI aspect.

The water looks great! The only problem I've got is the textures. Especially the pepsi one *shudders*. Maybe you should have them look like plain old boats with a few decals or somethin rather than one giant pepsi ad.

I'm guessing this ties in with your 3D wave code over in Snippets. Is the water a matrix, or something else?

Looks nice so far, just wondering, will you be keeping it realistic or are you thinking of including massive jumps and weapons etc?

@ Anime: the textures are just temporary - don't worry, they won't stay like that!!

@Bat, Mhack: the water is made of two layered and ghosted matrices (had to be matrices to enable dynamic movement), both with different textures of water ripples. Underneath the two matrices are a further two plains - one on top has a ghosted scrolling texture to add a ripple effect, and the one at the bottom is the see bed. Took a lot of trial and error, but I think it looks quite nice when you see it all moving. Demo up sometime soon.

Quick update:

Now added a very basic form of AI - so we now have other boats you can race against. This uses waypoint data to control their speed, direction, amount of 'skid' through the water and amount of body roll. Their motion looks quite realistic, although they are effectively on tracks at the moment. The next step is to get them to alter their course 'intelligently' if they are about to collide with something ..... could be tricky!

I've also added a ghost mode - where you can race against your own best lap (this was actually much easier to do than I though it would be)

Also, I think I've got the game running at a constant speed regardless of frame rate (turned out to be much more tricky than I thought it would be!)

Thanks to Flam who is modelling for me - but I still need more team members - please check out my team request: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=44564&b=9

Couple more screenshots to show the new boat model, and the AI opponents:

The game also now has dynamic cloud movement, and dynamic seabed lighting. I like the word dynamic.
