Hey guys.. I've got a question or two about ram in general..

Lately i've seen different types of ram such as pc2100, pc 2700, pc3200 etc..

I believe i have pc2700 in my computer right now, running on an athlon xp 2400+ system..

First question, What's the difference between pc2700 and pc3200?
Second question, Would pc3200 work on my system(athlon xp 2400+)

Is there a chart for comparison on which ram would work with what processors.. ie, pc3200 working on an athlon xp 1800+ etc?

WindowsXP Home(Service pack 2), Athlon XP 2400+(2.1Ghz), 1GIG Ram, Ati Radeon 9800Pro 128MB.

the PCxxxx classifications refer to the speed of the RAM, but in a different format. iirc PC3200 is 400MHz front side bus, PC2700 if 333MHz. So:

Answer to first question: The speed

Answer to second question: It would, but it would make no difference. Your Athlon 2400 is most probably a 333MHz chip, and your motherboard is probably 333MHz as well, so upgrading your RAM to 400MHz will do nothing, the new RAM will just run slower that it was designed. However, if your motherboard is 400MHz, and it supports overclocking, you could overclock your processor to 400MHz, and then installing PC3200 RAM would make a difference (not a very big one though)

Well, most parts will tell you what their Front Side Bus (FSB) is, so its just a matter of making them all the same. However, faster RAM is backwards compatible with slower boards and processors, and faster boards or processors are backwards compatable as well, so you could practically throw a computer together, but it wouldn't be working at its optimum ability

So your saying that if my motherboard supported 333fsb..

Then a 512mb ram chip that supported 400fsb is backwards compatible and will work on the 333fsb, but just wont be as fast as it can go right? It'll just end up going at the 333 speed?

[EDIT-RECENT DISCOVERIES... I found out that my friends computer is an athlon 1800 with 266fsb.. I'm going to buy him a pc2700 ddr card(333fsb), will it work with his computer?]
