If anyone online at the moment can help me test my game can you please download the client file below. I'm going to host a game and post my ip address and hopefully it will work It's nothing more than some moving cubes and chatting at the moment but i need to test it before i move on.

**Instructions**
Press the tab key to bring up a console and then type ip to enter the ip address, and type connect to connect to the game (hopefully).
If it fails to connect try restarting the app. Also to change your name type name in tthe console.

To chat in game press enter and to move use [w,a,s,d] and mouse. Also make sure console is closed to move etc.

Below are links to the current versions of the client and server downloads.

Ok I'm back with a new release and the downloadlink is below. I am going to run a server for a while so please feel free to jump in and give it a try (instrucions in readme file). I could also do with some feedback (questions, failed connections or bugs etc). Anyway for those interested the game will be an online rpg if all goes well. And it's working title at the moment is Altered Quest.

PS. If anyone has yahoo messanger and would be interested in helping me test online please let me know.

Thanks for the testing Merix. I'm going to have a web page that shows if the server is online and the ip address. It will make it easier. Anyway, going to stop the server for the time being.

Xtom was the first guy to get a Multiplayer game out
I have a feeling this is probably more on how to do it on a larger scale than a few players.

Ok I'm hosting another game for an hour or 2 so if anyone would like to download the new client and take it for a spin the link and host ip are in the first post. Please note that the models and animations are far from complete but I just wanted to have some better graphics while testing etc.

Oh yes I have also set up a forum for the game if anyone would like to join. http://alteredquest.proboards12.com/

oops I think I forgot to include the readme in the download. Here it is below.

Thanks I'll be looking into an offline element to the game too. So players can still explore and kill monsters, train etc. But my main focus will be for online play.

Anyway just a quick update to how it's coming along. I've got the player character animations done. The animations and models will likely change and improve as the game evoloves but will do for early play testing. I'm using dark matter models as my modelling skills are not the best. I also have portals working - the player walks through these to teleport from one area to another. I want to add some bad guys in soon for some action but will most likely release another non-combat version before hand.

If anyone is interested in hosting a server I will be releasing both the client and server exes for the next release so hopefully there will be a better chance of joining a game. There will be a board on my forum for hosted games and server ips or people can post here.

Ok I have the new client uploaded and also the server exe. I'm going to host a quick game for a while if anyone would like to test it out. Also if anyone else can host a game please do. The download links and my game ip are in the first post.

new in this release

* improved multiplayer code
* graphics! no longet a box on a matrix but advanced terrain and player character with animation
* portals - teleport player from one zone to another (they work but I recomend staying in the start zone as i haven't fully got them handled)

OK I've rehosted with same ip. Ussually if it doesn't connect in 2 attempts u need to restart the app and try again. If it continues to fail there's a network problem somewhere. You may need to check firewalls etc.

When it says "Connecting to (ip address)" you should place a timestamp at the end and when it either connects/fails, provide another timestamp so I have a clue if it is still trying or not.

From the time it displays "Connecting to (ip address)" until it displays failed or successful it is attempting to join the game. The join net game command is called once there and takes up to a minute or more sometimes. I don't see the need for timestamps there but will add them if they are a benefit.

Oh i think i see what you mean. Basically it only attempts connection once by itself and displays failed or successful. You have to type connect again to retry.

Right. I wrote a small VB App to connect to the server. It claimed it connected.

[EDIT]
It lied.

Going to write a program that people can use to test their network connection to see if it is a firewall or whatever stopping from connecting.

No, my program is showing that there your not listening on port 1900 which is the port that I am trying to connect on.

[EDIT]
I just wrote a port scanner and going to scan your entire IP here in a moment.

[EDIT 2]
Done scanning. You don't have ANY open ports.
Goto http://www.grc.com and use the free "ShieldsUP" port scanner which will scan your system to see what ports are open.

I have ports 2300-2400 open which are what direcplay use. At least that's what i read on a site. And I have had people connect succesfully before. Should i open ports 1900-2400?

I will try that shields up thing thx

Please open ports 1900-2400. My zonealarm says it's trying to connect using port 1900, which is the baseline for the server connection. I will stick around for another hour or so, then back to the hotel.

You can also do a "NETSTAT -AN" to see what ports are listening.

I ran the Example server and it seems to be listening on 1900, 2300, and 2301 for TCP and 1900 UDP

OK I've forwarded ports 1900-2400 from my router to my computers ip address. Could you try connecting with zonealarm off just for a min or two just to see if it's whats causing the problem? That shieldsup says port 2300 is open but not the others. I'm still looking into it but if you want to try again please do.

Yes, I turn off my zonealarm when trying to connect. I just use to to see what port it's trying to connect with.

I also use Commview to see my network traffic.

Trying now.

[EDIT]
Ok, I got UDP connections on port 2041, 1718 and 1719. So things are somewhat working.

hey, lets do this.

start/run/dxdiag.exe

Click on the "Network" tab and choose "Test DirectPlay"
Choose the option to connect. Enter my ip and port 2400. We should be able to see each other.

[EDIT]
Nevermind. I need to get the firewall back up and head to the hotel. I'm tired.

Below are the port settings i got off microsoft support site. The connection ports were forwarding to 192.168.1.255 which i think may have been my problem. I will change these the next time to 192.168.1.3 which is my computers ip. I don't know which method dbpro uses dx7 or 8, i would imagine 8?

Your ment to read the readme file mate. It tells you to press tab and bring up the console then type in ip and the host ip then type in connect.
