I like the scrolling background. I dislike the controls. I would suggest using the mouse to offer a more realistic pong play. Pong used variable controllers, usually paddles. Right now this is less of a game of skill and reflexes.

So far so good though.

what is so bad about the controls? use up and down in the keyboard to move the board.

And yes the game is like a Pong replica but I will add some more stuff to it, some power ups and stuff...

thanks for your reply.

awesome digitalmodr !

First regarding the bugs:
a) scrolling bg: I dont see anything wrong with the bg, I mean, like in my monitor everything looks fine... I will look at the game in other peoples computers, to see into that.

b) the paddle and the bottom border: Yes thats really easy to fix,LOL all I have to do is change an integer number. I resize the sprites, now they are smaller and I still have the integer numbers for the bigger sprites.

Regarding the tutorial: Yes I would love to, its going to take me a while to write (english is my second languaje) but as soon as I'm finished with all the power ups and the score system, I will get to the tutorial

Thanks mate for your response...

I thought it was pretty good. Though the way the ball bounces off the paddle, sometimes it bounces back the same direction it came, which seems a bit funny. Maybe it's just me though.

Again, I'd offer the abillity to use a mouse to control the paddle. The up and down keys limit your speed and reflexes.

The original pong game alowed you to move your paddle up and down as fast as you could twist that little dial.

The name of this thread threw me, as Phong is a method of 3D rendering...

I am the lead programmer at red spark studios
I also have a blog on how to make a game engine

mr joe: yeah I'm going to fix the " DISK " bouncing, the problem is I'm new to all this and I'm finding a bit dificulty to fix my problem, but I will eventually.

Tapewormz: And Again I will not use the mouse to move the boards, since I will add power ups and other things to the game as I'm learning DBP. I do not want the mouse to be used for the movement. Thanks for your sugestion, Again!

dj chainz: Yeah Phong is a Maya Shader - but at the same time I wanted to change the retro thing of calling all the games that looks like Pong, Pong Replica, Pong, Ponguish, etc... So I added an h to change the pronounciation of the name and in a no so far future I will create Phong 3D. So I'll have Phong 2D and Phong 3D, and then it will make sence

Well, mouse controls would improve your gameplay by about 25%.

Phong isn't a maya shader, phong is a shading method. Maya uses it, but it's not exclusive to maya.

Hey, you asked for a critique, so I'm critiquing you...

If you can't handle critisism then don't ask for it.

I gave you just as much praise.

Quote: "I like the scrolling background. I dislike the controls. I would suggest using the mouse to offer a more realistic pong play. Pong used variable controllers, usually paddles. Right now this is less of a game of skill and reflexes.

That was a very positive critique. In your favor. I point out one aspect of your game that needs improvement and you get all ruffled.

Imagine if you had to play Arkanoid (a pong game) with digital controls like the ones you have set up. It would be impossible to play once the ball starts moving fast. You just don't have the same freedom of movement. That's all I was trying to convey.

If you don't want a true critique and can't handle it, then don't ask for it.

It sounds like I hurt your feelings, when all I tried to do was say hey it's a good start so far, here's something that would make it play like pong.

That was value.

Again, I'll point out that I said nice things about your game which you seem to be convieniently skimming over.

If you want some phony praise then here it is...Your game is brillaint, your repetative scrolling backdrop is marvellous. Those big fat retardo paddles are pure genious, and the jerky movement of that ball is astounding. The random deflecting angles in your game are spectacular. I'll bet you the big boys like Electronic Arts are and UBISOFT are scrapping it out to be the first to get their hands on this hot commodity.

Hey calm down Tapewormz.

Personally I think it is better without mouse control. You can still get accuracy by how long you hold the key down. It reminds me of pong and breakout on the atari thingy (well the one i got last xmas that is just a controller you plug into the tv), which was really good.

Only the PONG and BREAKOUT thingy, used analogue controllers aka paddles. Not digital controllers. This brings us back to mouse controls.

Meh, whatever I take back whatever hostillity he saw in my remark.

WOW- This is the first pong game that got me addicted...The 2D graphics are smooth and really well done. The background gives it a really nice R-Type feel to it and that theme songs been stuck in my head ever since..don't know why no one else commented about that part.....Throw in a little multiplayer/online play, some more backgrounds, more music...and you have a winner on your hands

The background doesn't scroll smooth on my computer. There's a hiccup everyso often. He's probably using integers for his iterations and not floats.

I guess I was wrong, for pressing for the mouse controls, and he was wrong for getting pissy when I corrected him about phong shader.
