Whats the optimal/ideal number of polys to have in a weapon in a fps? I think i read in an article somewhere that between 1000-2000 is a good number but I believe that article was applying to half-life mods :p. Does the same apply to DBC even though, the engine isn't (i think) as efficient since processing power has been increased over the years?

And for all you 3d max users out there, is there a poly count function in max? I just know of this file properties thing that tells you the number of faces it has, but i think max treats faces as a 'surface' (which can be made of many polys). Or is my understanding of max's terms wrong?

That's not recommended for DBC, I would'nt go above 500 on a gun for the player, and enemy guns should be as simple as possible. DBPro can push more, although most of my weapons are still low poly regardless, it just makes all the media creation process easier and quicker (like animating and UV mapping).

well id say 1000 is too low for a decent fps these days 2000+ is the way to go :p, although you could remove polys that you dont see from the camera viewport imo 500 is far too low for a high detail fps gun for an enemy gun you should be around 100 polys tho

It's possible to make very decent guns <500, you just have to be sensible with cylinder detail etc.

Bottom line though, DBC will be slow with +1000 polys bolted to the camera.

2000+?
Hitman Codname 47's PEOPLE models only have about 2000 polys.

"Bottom line though, DBC will be slow with +1000 polys bolted to the camera."
Is this just because of DBC's rendering limitations or is it because of the computers processing power?
And does anyone know about max's poly count function?
