Dont start with an RPG, most experienced coders cant code an RPG. Start small, look at the pong tutorial at the top. I know you dont want to code pong, but if you start with an RPG you wont end up coding any of it, youll be collecting snippets and pasting them together. Learn the language, then when you know exactly how to code an RPG, get started. If you have to ask for snippets to get started with, your not ready to create an RPG.

Plain, simple, but hard truth

bob was saying you don't know how to use the edit button, you just showed us again you don't D: edit your posts, don't double post!

And everyone has already directed you to code to work off of. anime bloods thread which is probably down a few threads from this one (or up a few... it'll be somewhere here in the newcomers)
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=38186&b=7

And, even 2 months of practice, unless you're a genius, isn't enough to be able to jump into an action RPG

There is a big facination for RPGs at the moment, I myself is programming a FPS - Two of them! - With my team at the moment, But I suggest you start off with something like a pong game,

I started off doing something like that when i first dide programming

Cheers,
Ali M

Hi there JBolts1.

Just a piece of advice from a fellow Noob, DON'T try to make an rpg as your first project. All that will happen is you'll get yourself discouraged and then you will end up hating DBPro and not wanting to use it at all. Honestly thats what happens I speak from personal experience. I tried to make an FPS as my first game last May and I got soooo discouraged that I decided to hate DBPro. Well lucky for me I found Scouseknights Pac-Man tut and finished it.(My dad made me do it, belive it or not.) And now I like coding so much I do it every day! Okay to sum this all up I've used DBPro almost a year (well a year in 17 days ) and there is no way I could possibly make an rpg. So unless your God's greatest gift to the forum and the entire world programming community you should start with the tutorials that are stickied at the top of this page and the tuts in the Dev'sNetworks page. The monster hunt and limit rush tutorials work with DBPro just fine I think, I'm not sur as I've only done the 3DMonsterHunt one.

But if you want to disregard everything everyone has told you this might be of help, In the DBPro tutorials section on the Dveloper's Network Portion of the home site there is one called huge dungeons or somthing like that and it will show you how to make a randomly generated map. I didn't like it very much but it may be of some help to you.

BTW To put in perspective how hard it is to make an rpg, I think that RPGamer and the rest of the ED team have been working on one from since before the continets shifted.... Maybe evan before that well hope I was a more of a help than a annoyance.

How can you not find a thread when I give you a direct link to it o_O

But yes, not for your first game guy. I tried RPG, not even an action RPG, a turn based one and i've decided i'm not skilled enough to do it... granted i've not been using DB that long, but at least it's not my first game...
I'll try the RPG thing again in a year or so when i've got a few more games under me belt. That is teh smart thing to do

RPGs....I'm just trying to do a simple 8-bit style one for kicks and giggles and the design is a monster.

Here's how you do it:
You start off like everybody said, doing simple things. By doing these simple things you add new concepts to your repertoire of programming knowledge. Think of these concepts as paint colors. Once you have many different paint colors you can put them all together and make a beautiful work of art.

if u really want to do an rpg then i encourage u, i think its better to learn by implementing lots of concepts into one game than making 20 with each different concepts

Video games…they can take you places unreachable, impossible, unfeasible. They put you in the book...they put you in the movie...they put you in a world, a world that before could only be imagined.
