Yup, NASA are finally using thier skills for the good of knowlage heh.
Alright seriously, they're releasing a new specially designed probe in order to crash it into a Comet to find out what it is made up of, and how we can hope to defend ourselves if 'armageddon' actually came true.

The Probe it due to hit the Comet on Independance Day. It is quite an exciting time considering what this can spell for the scientific community as it isn't often we get a chance to actually study this stuff up-close so to speak.

Why not just throw the $30 billion at the crater... or give me the money, and throw me at it...

Actually, a friend of mine took a look at their calculations and they're off by 3 cat lengths.

US$30bn???

Raven, thats an incredibly inaccurate figure. The actual mission cost is US$330m. About 1/100th of what you've just quoted.

Although, that said, I'm planning to undertake a similar scientific mission myself. I'm going to crash my neighbour's car into the wall to see what damage it causes.

The cost of this mission is GB£50 squillion billion trillion million pounds. [1]

[1] Actual cost of this mission is only £10000 for a new car.

jeeze why on earth would they make such a costly mission, haven't they seen stargate?! all they gotta do is get sg1 to retrieve and repair a broken transport ship, then fly it home land it on the asteroid and take samples, then they can land on a planet and gate home, simple! and if a problem occurs where the earth is in danger, sg1 can laugh it off because they've already diverted one asteroid, whats another gonna do. then they will have a moments silence for the good lady doctor.

Dude! (Dudette?)

Try crashing an accuracy comet into that budget listed in the thread title, and lop off a bunch of zeros:

well whatever it cost (given i heard the figure on the news in the background while working), it's still one hell of alot of money.
especially if all they're going to do is crash it into a big 'rock'.

Well, problem is, sometimes these probes miss their targets and come tumbling down (like the ESO Mars missions, for example ) Can't really predict where they're going to land, but rumor has it all the CIA employees are dumping their British Telecom stock for pennies on the dollar (schillings on the pound? cents on the euro?)

Seriously though, a mission to a comet has incredible benefit to mankind. If they turn out to be the big snowballs we believe them to be, just imagine how much beer can be kept cold
