I'm trying to look into an application that will allow me to capture my desktop or a section of it, so that I can create tutorial movies for a 3D Application.

While there are many out there that do a good job, most cost something. I would like to know which are the best applications for creating these tutorial / introduction movies, and which ones will be capable of exporting to a format that I can later alter them.

Also while I have experience editing up Quicktime Movies and exporting them, I've not yet done this with Windows Media Video; If there are any recommended products to achieve this, that would be apprieciated as well.

Currently I have Adobe Premier CS, which no doubt is capable of what I'd like to do; but there maybe better options when dealing with Windows Media Formats.

This is for a desktop application, however it utilises the DirectX Layer; so this really needs to be taken into consideration on what can capture it effectively.

Also how fast will the computer that uses it will need to be.
Currently at my disposal I have an Althon 2600+, but if I will need quicker hardware and Ram in order to take 1024x768x32bpp Screens then I would like to know prior to going to the computer shop tommorrow.

Quote: "Adobe Premier CS"

do you mean premiere elements or premiere pro 1.5?

i use Matchware's screencorder for screen cap, its very good but costs a bit

it might be an idea looking into fanatasia - not sure on spelling, but i know that 3d buzz use it for screen cap of their vtms

if your trying to capture a picture of your screen on your computer, just hit the Print Screen button on your keyboard, and paste it where you want it.

Did you even read his post? He wants to capture movement--- for one thing you can't capture your mouse arrow with print-screen. For another thing, it would take years to do an entire tutorial movie with one frame at a time.

heh, yeah ho hum..
yeah Premier Pro 1.5 is CS iirc, I can't rightly remember as mine just displays CS when it boots. It's like Photoshop 8 is CS and that's what is on the screen when it loads.

i'll try looking into Fantasia, links would be cool. i should probably have asked this on Polycount thinking about it now.

http://www.hyperionics.com/

Free screen capture program that i use, it has regional screen selecting, adjustable frame rate's, adjustable frame compression, and selectable codec's. The free version however has a very small watermark on the top left protion of the screen saying unregistered hypercam. Can capture layered or transparent windows but slow's preformance, the full version is about 40$(us). If your capturing such things as these you might want to get a pci hardware based video editing card that can capture from screen instead esp if your hardware will be a issue, i doubt you'll be able to capture 1024x768 32 with any sort of decent frame rates with a software based recorder.

Yeah this is what I'm interested about Zone Chicken... I mean I don't mind buying new hardware, but knowing what I'd need so I don't end up spending a small fortune would be helpful.

dunno.. heh, what I've decided to do is use my DVI to capture the socket using a second computer as I bought a new sodding computer today.

one of these new Semperon machines, looked like an interesting processor. So what I'll do is an in-line and just save the output digitally to the second system... seems like that'll let me do what I want, and given it has a nice 250GB HDD should be enough space to edit things up on.

Actually the link from The Flashing Blade is a pretty good piece of capture software. You should check it out because it's freeware.

I tried the program that zone chicken recommended Hypercam 2 and i thought it was cool it worked really well for me and the shareware version isnt too bad just a little mark at the top of the screen when you play the video file. But, it slowed down my computer alot, my computer ran at about half the speed.

When i was recording me play a game, use a 3d modelling application or when i ran damn small linux ontop of windows, my computer almost ran so slow it wasnt usable. Just running linux ontop of windows really slows down my computer but its fun too do because i never knew that u could run two operating systems at the sametime. And damn small is actually the name of the linux distrobution, http://www.damnsmalllinux.org, if u download the embedded version it will run ontop of windows so u can use windows and linux at the same time.

But i liked the program zonechicken recommended, i always wondered how people recorded video of them using a program.
