Firefox does have some issues with Mozilla based plugins so I'm not surprised. Also, if you tried to upgrade without removing it it won't work usually. First, uninstall Chatzilla (Tools > Extenstions > Chatzilla > Uninstall). Confirm that it's been deleted (check the firefox\components directory and make sure that chatzilla-service.jar has been removed) then download the newest version and install it (it's at http://www.hacksrus.com/~ginda/chatzilla/). I haven't tested it in Firefox but I did this with Mozilla Suite and Netscape recently and it worked.

'Firefox does have some issues with Mozilla based plugins'

Mozilla Firefox has problems with Mozilla Firefox plugins? (Actually, all Mozillas including Firefox all use Netscape-based plugins, and that's the _ONLY_ ones they support).

Osiris - you do mean Chatzilla, right?

You're not referring to the IRC chat on this site? Because if you are, try installing a different Java VM..

I meant Firefox occasionally has problems with plugins developed for Mozilla Suite as does Netscape 7.2. Usually there's no problem but sometimes there is.

Ohhh... I thought you meant Chatzilla which is an IRC client that runs in Mozilla/Netscape/Firefox. OK, in that case the docs on the mozdev.org recommend JRE 5 I think (I know anything earlier than 1.3 won't work). Also, the Microsoft JVM that comes with Windows only works with IE so make sure it's not trying to use that.

EDIT: Yeah, that's correct. I found the docs here: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/java.html

We want you to re-install your Java Virtual Machine! (The IRC program on the site is a Java applet.)

Assuming you're using Windows:
http://java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp. Enjoy.

Oh yeah - soz, I see what you mean now, GothOtaku..

Yeah, the reason it crashed is because it triggers a java applet, and assuming you don't already have java installed then it installs it, the newest version 'n' all..

Uhh... Use ChatZilla?

You need to un-install Java.

Then try again.
