Agh, probably pretty fragmented. Last time I defragged was a couple of months ago. I'll set it going overnight tomorrow (200gb takes here about 20 hours )

Get 15 new commands, all the date / time commands left out of DBPro for free!

I do mine weekly, on the weekends. Tomorrow is my due date (my hdd is in heavy use atm so not now )

i reformat about as routinely as most people defrag, so i only defrag once or twice every couple of months

I defrag atleast once a week if not more.. probably more like once a day.

I've never defragged, and I only reformat about once every 5 years (earlier if I install hardware that needs formatting).

I've defragged TWICE even when it told me I didn't need to. Not a defragger myself, but it's nice to be neat - maybe even pays.

Merix that looks like Linux or something. I don't know what it all means sadly. Light blue, dark blue, yellow.. there's even a cross hatced piece! p.s. why use .php?

Probably 'cuz you've got your drives organized through RAID or something. A single 200gb hard drive would be a heck of a lot slower than six 100gb or whatever you have to give that much space. Especially if it's a cheaper (slower) model

Nope, not raid, just standard IDE.



Curious though, why is it that when a drive is sold as having so much space, it never does? It seems to be a few gigs less than as sold.

Haha.
Yes, mine are quite full. I'ts about half full, so still defragging around 300GB with a (32 bit) 3.0GHz processor.

@LOS on the comment of it looking like linux..

I use a defrag program called Diskeeper. Works about 3 times quicker than the windows defrag program does, and also has good options for when i want it to work on it's own etc.

I defrag maybe once every other year, but I format and reinstall from scratch maybe every 3-5 months. But I'm under the impression that it doesn't matter how many times one formats his drive--- it's always going to be fragmented. Isn't that the truth?

daily? I can't think of any reason you'd have to defrag daily.
I'll just post the percentages.

Drive D: 15GB FAT32(IDE)
total fragmentation: 24%
file fragmentation: 47%
free space fragmentation: 1%

Drive G: 18GB FAT32(SCSI)
total fragmentation: 12%
file fragmentation: 25%
free space fragmentation: 0%

Drive C: 40GB NTFS(IDE)
total fragmentation: 21%
file fragmentation: 41%
free space fragmentation: 2%


Not bad considering drive D: probably hasn't been reformatted in serveral years.
