It costs a lot of money and you need a license to sell them. It would be better to make games for PC or Mobile Phone, which TGC products can

if you're just starting programming, don't go after a ps2 game. you'll most likely get frustrated and give up, which will lower your self-confidence and you won't fell like programming anymore. has happened to a lot of people trust me. my advice: learn C++, write a few small things, gradually going larger, until you can work with external libraries, then look into ps2 specific programming (google). i also recommend the ps2 linux kit, which is like 200 bucks, but legal. gamedev.com has an article about basic graphics programming for the ps2 linux kit. http://www.gamedev.net/reference/articles/article1967.asp (part one)
and http://www.gamedev.net/reference/articles/article2027.asp (part two).
don't get discouraged though. it's still very possible, just very hard for a new (budding) programmer.

but if you're using tools or sdks that you aren't allowed to use (for example, the xdk) unless you have bought a liscense, then making a game, even though you made it, is illegal because you used other people's software and stuff without their permission.

An elf file is like an EXE but for linux.
Get a dreamcast! All you need to pay to work on it is a serial cable.

LOL, I was making PS2 games before I moved onto DB (well, a blue triangle that you could move left and right, was going to be space invaders until DB found me)

Quote: "all iknow is there is something called "ps2yabasic" that means plays station 2 yet anorther basic. "

There is such a program, it's called YABASIC and does indeed stand for yet another basic. If you've got a PS2 you should have received a free demo disc with it.

On there is a program called YABASIC. Look on the net and you'll find plenty of places to find help on using it. You can save your games onto your memory card and show them to other people. Trust me though, you'll be a lot happier if you use DB and make PC games, it won't be that long before there's a PS3 out so I doubt you'll have enough time to really get to grips with any kind of PS2 game making before most people have moved on.

Actually an ELF file is, from what I've seen, the way you run a PS2 game on a PS2 or a PS2 dev kit. It doesn't have anything to do with Linux :p A PS2 dev kit is just a large PS2 with extra power, two network cards, more RAM, and it says DEV on the side. Pretty cool looking if you ask me

.elf files are nothing, there trash that the dev kit leave's behind from compiling your data.
At least that's how it is with .gba rom's you need, c/c++ compiler gba dev kit (there are free ones), after code what you want, you make a dos batch file, that will compile the headers and source files with the dev kit, and leaves a .elf and various other file's depending on what your doing, and a .gba the other file's are trash left over from compiling and the .gba will work in a emulator or gba with a flash card. I would think ps2 game's would be pretty much the same.

I just told you what ELF files are, and they're not trash.

Do a search on Google. There are no "scripts" or teh "codez" you can use to magically make a game that will run on PS2, okay? You need a professional dev kit, just like I said, and only game companies have access to them.

Quote: "make thread about xbox game"

No, don't! There have been dozens of threads started on how to use DBP on Xbox (you can't), so just do a thread search!

Sigh... I know a bit about console bedroom coding, since I spent about a year of Internet Time searching on Google for a BASIC-syntax language for consoles...

With the XBOX, there is no such thing as DLL files (Dynamically Linked Files) - like with DBC or DBPro, any 'external' pieces of code will be compiled into the main program. Well, there is one exception. Xboxkrnl.exe. But what do you expect??

Moving from Visual C++ 6 (and .NET, obviously) is quite easy - if you could get your hands on an officially licensed XBox development kit, as mentioned above....

How about running Linux on yer XBox? Will that do you?
http://sf.net/projects/xbox-linux/

Or how about da big bomb, the OpenXDK?
http://www.OpenXDK.org/
(Note: You will need to get your hands on Cygwin + GCC (Gnu Compiler Collection), as the OpenXDK is essentially just a library that you tell GCC to work with. If anybody wants me to, I'll dig up the similar link (OpenGClib) for the GameCube..)

Nothing wrong with Cygwin, it's completely free, just a bit hard on the modem, that's all.. (100's of megz's).

XBox emulator (dunno if it's good, just quickly searched SourceForge. Looks decent). http://cxbx.sf.net

Now, considering that I'm not interested in the XBox that much, (GC is my scene), I think that's a not-too-bad collection of links there. If you want to know about the GameCube, I could fill about 3x as much space sooo...

Oh yeah, and you need to know C++. I'm currently working (okay, okay, PLANNING) a project that allows you to do just one set of code, and have it work for the N64, the PSX, & the PC. In a BASIC-syntax language (I'm going to base the code around Assembler rather than C).

'ELF files' - yeah, it is stupid trash. I mean, who wants to play the game you just made using the PS2 official development kit? Me, I'm in it for the progress bar...

Oh yeah, and just realised the link I missed..
It's an ultimate collection of a dude going by, commenting on homebrew stuff for the XBox, the PS2 and the PSX. I only just realised that 'GC' isn't anywhere in there. Damn.

http://www.BugInTheMachine.com - after the 'explanation', click on the middle entry 'BugInTheMachine', then click the UK flag to switch the language to English. It rules, period.

If you would have read what i typed i said for the .gba not ps2 as i have not written anything for a ps2 i though they may have been simular in there compiling methods. GBA compiles out binary to .elf, then recompiles to a final binary from .elf to .gba you only need the .gba and you can throw away the .elf after you compile as it does nothing. Again i was not refering to ps2 as i haven't written anything for that only gba.

Unless you've got a modded PS2, you *CANNOT PLAY THEM*. Unless you happen to own an official DVD+/- RW with the ability to create erronous sectors. And no, you don't.

I did read what you typed. ".elf files are nothing, there trash that the dev kit leave's behind from compiling your data." Even if you're referring to GBA games (which I'm not sure why, as this thread isn't about the GBA), it would still confuse people into thinking ELF files are trash on the PS2.

like, what are you trying to learn about and need source code for? there are literally trillions of lines of free code out there; are we talking really simple stuff, directx, or win32? you know, things like that. you can't learn how to make a C++ game if i give you code for a text editor, ya know? i also reccommend tutorials and books, instead of just source code (don't get me wrong, source is a good way to learn how to do stuff, but it won't teach you much without additional supplements.)

There's a lot more support for programming on the Dreamcast. I looked into it several years ago, and I didn't like the code structure of it one bit!

I don't know about PS2 but I had a XBox Development machine Microsoft "Loaned me" to test out their XBox.

After I think it was 90 days, they asked if I wanted to keep the machine and develop games, and if so, fork over 16k.

I gave the machine back.
