How do you create Levels on a platform game (veiw: side on)

I made a small level with this format:

+ Code Snippet

DATA 0,0,0,0,0,0,0
DATA 0,0,0,0,0,0,0
DATA 0,0,0,0,0,0,0
DATA 0,0,0,1,2,2,2
DATA 1,1,1,1,1,1,1

for x=1 to 5
for y=1 to 7
read a

if a=1 then . . .
if a=2 then . . .

next y
next x

But when i create levels like that it limits you, i mean you cant create large levels this way.

Is there an easier way of doing this

I take it you mean scrolling platformers as apposed to static screen platformers (a la Sonic and Mario against Jet-Set-Willy)? I think they are basically the same idea, but you have to learn a fair bit on scrolling.
