For those of you who don't know what a Super Volcano is, it's a very large and very destructive volcano that errupts every 500,000 years or so and apparently it's passed it's due date for erruption...so scientists won't know when they will next errupt. THEY? Yes, there are about 10 in the world. Of course when it comes to these things, we are usually wrong and if we researched it in detail we'll probably find that it's another million years before one errupts so don't go getting nightmares. But hey who cares it's the Usa and some small islands ¬_¬ Hey I'm just kidding. But apparently if that happened the USA will be covered in black smoke and the erruption would be heard from the otherside of the world. NOW THAT IS TERRIFYING BUT AMAZING!

Cheers,
Nick.

Sound can't travel through space.

Yellowstone National Park is a supervolcano.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure theres a better chance of the Earth being hit by an Asteroid than a SV erupting.

i heard theres this volcano in the canary's which when it erupts, its whole island will landslide into the see sending a tsunami across the atlantic. tsunami waves gather in height and speed the further they go, and since its the whole of the atlantic the wave has to travel across, the wave will whipe out the entire east cost of the US, shame the white house is closer to the west coast (unless i stand corrected)

nah, it'd reach the white house.

It'd pretty much take out the democratic population, thus putting more conservative nuts in office. It'll never end. BWA HA HA.

I would have thought it would be the other way....but I know when they reach the shore the hight and speed hugely increase because the water's got no where else to go

So...

what

Comets, volcanos, tsunamis, hurricanes... at the end of the day nature has more ass kickery than us and there's not much we can do about it but adapt to the situations we find ourselves in. It's hardly news that some natural disaster could wipe out [half] the globe .

We need a team of

a computer hacker
an NFL player
a seismologist
and a rockclimber

to venture into the center of the Earth and stop this catastrophe all while blowing up a lot of stuff and maybe even some boobies.

You forgot coming to terms with their inner demons, facing betrayal from their own superiors, wasting half the time civilization has left fighting over leadership and making up with tears and/or comfort sex, and winning against all the odds with a single second left on the timer and huamnity on the verge of total destruction.

Just like in real life !

Anyone ever seen/read journey to the centre of the earth, it ain't bad.

Anyhoo, back on subject, maybe a giant flower will sprout up from the crater of a super volcano, small fairy folk will climb out the middle of it and teach us all the secret to eternal happiness. Why does everything always have to ba a disaster?

If the super volcano does eurupt it won't destroy anything far from where it erupted, it won't blow the US to bits. And that super tsunami could reach 200 ft. high, but it can't reach far inland like any tsunami so the White House can't be destroyed. You guys have been watching too much Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel.

that's quite silly, and untrue You can't gain energy from nothing... the energy would quite rightly disapate, however, there'd still be a hell of a lot left over to consume the eastern coast

These are things we should be concerned about, however, currently we haven't the knowledge or technology to do anything about it, so perhaps when we do then we can make an "escape" plan, for now, it's really nothing we can do, so we may as well get on with better things to do

Yup, waves gaining energy the further they go would be disobeying the laws of physics, hell, you'd be able to make a Perpetual Motion machine if that were true.

That actually is the definition of a hacker, it's only movies that refer to hackers as people who hack into systems, they should really have called those people crackers, but that does'nt sound very exciting.

So what about people who just use hacker tools and tutorials spelling stuff out somewhere? Wouldn't exactly call them "ace" programmers.

More like a definition that came from the film "Hackers". What a complete pile of crap that was. Or perhaps Independence day. Yep indeedy. End of the world is coming very very soon, so to prove to the president that it's really going to happen, you spend the precious time making a really complicated program (flashesque these days I suppose) to demonstrate what you mean. Just tell him.... grrrr... although I actually meant the scene where he realises he could give the alien mothership a cold (sigh), by writing a virus. Now even if you stretch the idea of learning a whole new language in a few hours and writing a virus in time, he knew that time was critical when he uploaded it. So he included a skull animation and a good wav file of laughter if I remember rightly. Would have uploaded in like a nanosecond if he hadn't included all the media. T**t. Grrrr. Angry now....

Someone write a password entry system that has a door opening if you are successful, and an animated skull saying no entry if you are not. Also make sure that the passwords "GOD", "LOVE", and "WHATEVER" work all the time, as "Hackers" taught us they are used *all* the time.

Get a job as a cleaner where I work. Check out all the postit notes for login and password info. Don't need to be an ace hacker for that one. Hell, get a big telescope and look through the window.

Cheers

I think what he might have meant is that they get higher as they approach land, which they do because all that water has to climb up the ocean floor as it reaches the shore.

theres a few factors which affect a waves height by the time it reaches shore, 2 of which being wind and distance traveled. waves accelerate when they travel i cant remember why, but there was a reason for it, wind can slow the waves down or speed them up, but when the waves as powerful as a tsunamsi there's very little that wind can do to save those that get in the winds way.

another factor is that as the water gets shallower the water gets pushes up so the wave gets higher, which is why you can get pictures of lighthoses being engulf by a giant wave which previoulsy only looked a couple of meters high.

theres also the case of if you live in a bay, such as in the bay of bengal, the water gets squeezed up the bay the pressure builds up before it hits bangladesh.

The reason he was able to write the virus so quickly was because Bill Gates had recently talked the aliens into installing Windows '98 into all their ships' systems.

well, considering "virii" is probably a very human concept, who's to soy aliens ever thought of it, or if a virus ever were created, the alien was executed?

So I say there were major security holes in the software..

Secondly, yes, I agree it'd prolly be impossible for him to create a compiler for whatever system they had and write a program for it

How does that apply? One could say anything is a 'human concept'. Frankly I always found it rather unrealistic when aliens are introduced in science fiction that have never 'thought of' something (generally something like lying or murder, for purposes of pointing out how evil humanity is). At the end of the day they'd have to be really, really, really stupid

not necessarily, they very well could know something we don't, and thus have no need to be evil in a way that humanity is.

Human's have evolved from very harsh conditions, the top man wins, so to speak.

Aliens very well could have been living in a utopia for all their history, and would have no need to be violent, evil, etc..

Why is it that aliens have to have human emotion.

They would have very different societies from us.

Computer's are just ones and zeros, it's the easiest way to do it.. human instict, that's a human trait

I can't realistically see how 'human nature' could not apply to all other alien species. Life itself follows the rules of survival of the fittest, it has nothing to do with humanity specifically. And even if one has no need for something or has never encountered it, it's a bit hard to believe that nobody would think of it. Even in a nearly perfect (subjective obviously) society without vice and death, if emotions existed at all, they would have negative ranges and hence room for pretty much any perception of 'evil'. And I believe (but may be wrong) in saying that all intelligent life has some emotional range, and the more intelligent, the more emotion (scientifically speaking).

Bit of a vague post but I think there's something worthwhile in it

Interesting topic and all, I just thought I would say that (in my opinion) a being without emotions is merely a machine...
