I've completed the first version of my webserver that some of you may remember me posting about a while back. From the advice that peopl gave me I have decided to make it freeware. You can download it here! (Check bottom of the post).

Here's a screenie:

KNet is a functioning webserver that allows you to publish a website from your very own harddrive! It's a very small application that uses very little of your system resources.

If you find any bugs, have any comments or feel that KNet could be improved in some way then please contact me at this address:

You realy should read the readme.txt file (unless I forgot to mention it!). To close down KNet instead of minimising it to the task bar you have to click on File>>Exit.

I hope that solves the problem.

Edit:

Sorry, my mistake! There was indeed a problem with closing the server down. I've fixed the bug (and used some nicer icons). Here you go:

yeah once I figured out that problem with closing I was goingi to submit a bug here.
You should really add a feature where you rightclick the taskbar icon and see a menu with at least Show, Exit

That was in the original plan, but you have to bind a popup menu to a window which is difficult as you'd only need that feature if there is no window. I am, however, looking into it. Thanks for the feedback.

Whats the password supposed to do? Myself and friends can still access everything without needing a password... Also, can you make it so .mp3's can be downloaded from the server? and .wma's if possible.

#edit, oh right. The password is for shutting down the server.
Can you password protect it from people trying to access it?

I don't think theres a way to use HTTPS to password protect a server, however I will look into it for you. I have been looking into streaming .mp3's and .wma's but I'll try to add the download feature now.

Here you go: .mp3 and .wmv support now enabled!

Version 1.04b now avaliable at (lots of new features):

Add a thing that forces to go to the index and if it doesn't exist then it lists the contents

I think theres a bug with .mp3's... It scrambles the filename. I try to download it in mozilla, and first i get this:

Notice how it doesn't say what the filename is, and also says it doesn't recognise the file type, even though it has done before.

Then i get to the mozilla download manager, where it shows the filename...

And its just a scrambled string. If it helps, the actualy filename is
Quote: "Cake - I Will Survive.mp3"

It also retains all ID3 tags as it runs fine in windows media player.

Also, a bug in the About form. You click ok and nothing happens, then when you click the "X" in the corner you get an error and it shuts the server down.

Other than that, i like the latest version. The little alerts are useful and its just generally nice.

Thats strange ReD_eYe and thanks for brining it to my attention. The .mp3 feature has worked in testing with IE, from now one I will probally get some tests done with other browsers (anyone want to help I need FireFox and Mozilla).

I think the problem may be with the way KNet handles the type of file (I used audio/mp3 when it could really be anything - it seemed to work so I left it).

I'll get right on it.

you should create a text file with the different mime types so we can add our own

it could simply be setup in a list, what files to allow downloading, and what files to have parsed by the server.

New version please!
Is there a way to make your IP fixed? Or when an address is typed in, to have it directed to your current IP? So i could sign up for a free dot.tk domain name and have it linked to my "home server"? Because i could use dot.tk at the moment, but when my IP changed, i'd have to update the place the domain points to.

Do i make any sense?

@ReD_eYe

You make perfect sense! There is no way to make your IP fixed (unless you have a fixed IP connection). The idea of having the webserver is that, if you want it so, it's on all the time. I would like to see if I can assign an address to the IP but at the moment I'm not sure how to do that.

If anyone can help on that subject then i'd gladly accept it!

@Jerico2Day

Custom MIME types will appear in v1.05 but through the program it's self and not a .txt file.

Hey Killswitch, thats pretty good. A week or two I ago, I too made a little one-window server app, much like this. Unfortunately, after days of trying to find out why I could only access it from my LAN and not by my WAN IP, it turns out my ISP automatically blocks all external server actions. Which also hinders my multiplayer game making.

Yours is nice, though it too will not work for me.

kenmo, are you sure they don't just block port 80?

If they blocked "external server activity" then all of your stuff wouldn't work.. like mirc, transferring files from any messenger service.. etc..

Also, are you sure you simply haven't opened up the ports you need on your router?

red_eye, it's called a static ip, they usually cost a buck or two, I can't recall. Also, to run a server from your home, you may be required to have one of your isp's more advanced plans, so you want to check into that before you start going full out, so ya don't get flagged
