Not exactly free, but old, and probably cheap, Delta Force Land Warrior. I play it every few weeks. I love spending my time, stealthily crawling through valleys, looking for the perfect place to take a shot or two.

Fun.

You are not alone.

CTU Marine Sharpshooter, if you want to torture yourslef with bad gameplay, graphics and sound. I believe it's currently retailing for about $2.

OOOH! CR pwnd Osiris!

Ahem. You could try ghost recon; I had the first version on Xbox and it was pretty fun, although that isn't just sniping. You could try to find a demo.

if you have registered your original hl cd-key on steam you should be able to download and play team fortress and loads of other game, plus look in the 3rd party section some of the mods are great.

IS there any way to fix this? Could it have been caused by having to reinstall wildows?

The Battlefield series has good sniper support, but you can't set it up so you're on your own unless you want to shoot the same ai over and over again. If (like me) you'd prefer hordes to shoot, Battlelfield 1942 (with expansion packs) or Battlefield Vietnam would be good choices.

[edit] I've got Half Life (original) working beautifully on Win XP Home, but I'm stumped with that error, doesn't make any sense at all!

do you have broadband? if so try installing it straight from steam, even if you don't try using steam to install it from the cd.

I think Valve have become a little (might be an understatement) paranoid and over-causious when it comes to tackling piracy. But when you consider that nearly 90% of all games sold in China and the areas around are actually illegal.

Yes, but Valve's games (all two of them) do get sold worldwide.
