Ok, I assume most of you bright young minds will find this pretty quick, it took me about a day and alot of over-complicated thinking, but I finally figured it out. It is a game called "pedals around the rose", the point is to roll the 5 dice, then figure out the correct number, and check your answer, once you can get the right answer more than 5 times in a row you will have got the puzzle. Here is a link to a flash representation of the puzzle....

http://crux.baker.edu/cdavis09/roses.html

Give it a try.

Guns arn't the problem, people are the problem, shoot all the people and guns arn't a problem anymore.

Interesting. I guessed what it would be before rolling once. Normally I'm like brain dead on this sort of thing. Reminds me of the old classic...

A EF HI K
BCD G J

How does the rest go? Took me a good hour on that one. Even when told that kids normally get it pretty quick. If the above looks wrong then convert to courier. Basically you have to guess if the following letters appear on the first or second line. I had some good formulas going....

If you figure out the puzzel don't tell anybody the solution, I want a bunch of people out there to over-complicate it the same way I did! In fact I had a moster equation going, something like this....

x-6-4-6+6-2=number

of course that was wrong.

Guns arn't the problem, people are the problem, shoot all the people and guns arn't a problem anymore.

Ah, but that gives it away slightly. Remember the 3 things to say....

BTW How about my one?

[brag]Took me all of 10 seconds, right after my first guess[/brag]

That's a cool puzzle. I love those lateral thinking ones like that.

Fair enough. [doubleBrag]Took me 5 secs to guess. Didn't roll once before guess[doubleBrag] Although these statements pretty much destroy any formula aspirations anyone has.

Anyone get my puzzle?

Yeh, the answer is that [POTENTIALLY DAMAGING REMARKS CENSORED]

Took me about a minute to work out the petals around the rose thing though (embarrassingly). I would have taken longer if it wasn't for the "the answer's in the question" clue.

Damn. What happened to the secret code of silence?

Yeah, I've had people with degrees etc taking ages over that one. I myself had severe algorithms going at one point even though I knew kids solved it rather easily. B**tards.... Think the more knowledge you have (and the more techy you are) then the more you put complicated formulas around such things.

I'm going to email you the answer - but don't open the email until you've given it a damn hard try ok? The subject line of the email will be "Petals Around the Rose answers. OPEN WITH CAUTION, MAY MAKE YOU KICK YOURSELF"

Oh, I was just having a laugh. The text on the website is hard to tell if they are taking the p**s out of geeks who take themselves too seriously, or they really are that serious. And geeky.

Yes, it is a kick-yourself thing.

By my third attempt at solving it, I was square rooting my eqation, it actually got me the answer once! LOL, I guesse I am one of those people who overlooks common sense and tries to find something technical in something simple.

I probably went about doing this the wrong way, rather then sitting there and thinking about what the answer would be, I took about 10 really quick guesses until I caught onto the pattern. I think it's more likely to trip you up if you're just given the one question and you have to keep guessing the answer until you get it right. Doing it that way would probably make people think about it a lot more rather than just taking pot shots like I did.

I don't get what all the fuss is about. It's like a playground game, where some kid makes up his own arbitary rules and "you stink if you don't get it".

I'm going to make up a game where the answer is the number of vertical lines in the letters of a word, or the number of loops, or the number of "t"s. If you don't get it, you stink.

By the way, I do know the answer to the petals, so I don't stink.

I can't figure this one out...

but:

I just guess I'm too smart then

The difference is the name of the game is a good indication of what you're looking for. Had it been named something obscure, I can guarantee you that it would've taken me a lot, lot, longer.

I guesse I am pretty smart, cause it took me like a day to figure it out (well I spent maybe an hour trying, then gave up, and came back the next day and figured it out)

You know next time I apply for a job I'm going to try that. "I'm smart because I got the answer to a lateral thinking puzzle which involved me completely ignoring the obvious numerical nature of the problem and working out what other arbitrary visual rules the goon who invented the puzzle had come up. I will require £100k per annum, plus expenses and a company car."
