What is the fascination with Irrlicht? - I mean, 30fps with <8000 polys on screen did not fill me with confidence, what is Irrlicht good for?

But there's that other free engine too, and it seems much more capable, ogre? - something like that anyway. I tried Walabers newton demo in ogre and it seemed to kick lumps out of Irrlicht.

I'm not exactly clued up about these engines, just interested in what Irrlicht can do, seems to be getting quite popular around here.

What, is your computer like 333mhz or something? I managed 90fps with 20000 polys on the screen

Nah, it's not as bad as that - 1.6ghz 512mb Win2kPro FX5200(128mb). The demo I tried was the one with the 2 bots, sorta like a BSP level thing, but while running that I rarely got more than 30fps, on the spectator preview of said demo when it's just showing the level, I got about 60fps.

You sure you weren't using the software device?

I'll have another look tonight, but I'm pretty sure I selected DX9.b as the renderer, it did look fine - just not very fast.

Oh well, if it looked fine then it wasn't the software device. What demo do you mean exactly? The tech demo?

@Van B Although i havent used ogre for at least 2 years now im am sure it was intended as a rendering engine and not to develop games(however it may have changed in my absense correct me if im wrong)
-Also whatever happened to crystal space and nebula there seems to be no word of them anywhere.

I think OGRE has gone through some major changes, it's becomming quite a strong engine, Walabers demo (try RGT) is very cool.

I tried again, turns out it was 30fps because I had shadows turned on, it's a steady 60fps with no shadows. It's the FPS tech demo.

http://www.planeshift.it/

*kiss*

yeah the intro not you!

Plane Shift uses crystal space. First play I had was with the tall red castle. You could run around the huts and talk little to NPCs. Ran well. Looks like they have fighting now.
[edit] OH GOD ITS 230MB! [/ed]
