I realy hate to have to make a thread about this in case its rediculously obvious, but I couldnt find anything, so heres the problem: There's a difference between a mesh file and an object file, but they can both have the same extension. For example, a .3ds file can contain either object data or mesh data. When i use a .3ds file with mesh data, it textures just like an object, but when i try to use a mesh file with a .x extension, it shows up as a silhouette of approximately the same color as the texture applied to it. I have tried fiddling with the "SET OBJECT", "SET OBJECT AMBIENT" "SCALE OBJECT TEXTURE", and "SET OBJECT TEXTURE" commands, but they dont change anything. Is this a problem with dark basic or is there something messed up with the mesh file im using? thanks

As far as I understand, when you convert an object to a mesh, or create a new mesh, it is basically just the vertex data, no texturing info (at least that is what I have read) so that saving a mesh back out would result in the model being exported, but you would loose most other data about it.

That being the case, I do not know why saving a mesh in .3DS would result in different output than saving a mesh in .X.

I have some .X models that have testure data in the existing file. I'll try a demo and see if I convert it to mesh and save as .X
