does the card have a fan on it? and is the fan running when powered up? Are there software tweaks and temperature watches for the card? Is it set too high? Is it overclocked accidentally/purposely?

Lots of things mostly cattlerustler hit almsot all of them another one could be the voltage and if your AGP on your mobo supports the version your card runs on IE AGP 2.0 i dunno if that'd cause it to over heat but who knows

The search continues.

my card does not have a fan on it. when i bought the whole system, it was working properly and stable. i just had to format my hard disk and repartion it becoz it only had a C: volume. since then my card overheats when ever i install its drivers.
there r no software tweaks or temp software. it isnt set too high and its not overclocking. any more solutions?

i think my processor has Hyper Threading Technology. its an intel 865P. i've read about it on www.intel.com but there seems to b two 865P. and both 533MHz FSB. one with a HT and another without HT. so how can i know that my processor supports HT. and can this overheating b caused by the processor becoz HT is disabled?

"pwnt" = "owned" which = bad...

see if theres a fan kit for that card.
not sure if this has anything to do with the presence of HT or not

Doubt it... How many fans do you have in your computer? What makes you think it's overheating?

well i only have the CPU fan. actually i sometimes think its the CPU that is overheating. but how can it b related to the VGA card? amd just everytime i install its drivers, the system restarts every now and then. plus everytime i play big time 3D games i can feel the heat coming out from the case. and the thing thats bothering me more is that when i brought the whole system it was working perfect. i sometimes open the case to let the heat out. and i also put a stand-fan just beside the case for more cooling. it sometimes work and dosnt restart for a while. but i'm just fed up and i cant run from it. i need a solution. the VGA card hasnt a fan with it. its just the sync heat metal. so any solutions guyz?

You dont need a Graphics Card fan for a card that bad...I have a 9600se 128mb and I dont have a Graphics Card fan...

and mine hasnt overheated so...I think its a problem w/ the card...Have you recently taken it out of the PC (could have fried it with electrostatic charge) or knocked it?

i'm afraid that i didnt take it out from my PC. if i knocked it or electrostatic charged it, i think it wouldnt work from the first place. there is something wrong, but i guess the ultimate question is "where". if only i knew where is the problem. ive tried everything on my mind and ran out of solutions. i tried updating the drivers and installing new ones. didnt work. i tried reinstalling the card. didnt work. i tried examining the RAMS and check for faulty ones. but no faulty RAMS. i even updates my BIOS. if its from the drivers then why everytime i install them, my system overheats and makes sudden restarts whenever i play games or even sometimes just using some applications on my desktop. i'm just out of ideas and i hope theres someone out there who can help me out. thankx in advance

Well i had a PC overheat for about 1 year...It restarted after long periods of use...then one day the PSU blew up and I had to replace it. The PC is working fine now...so maybe its your PSU (Power Supply Unit) that needs replacing...How old is the PC?

its 1 year old. but how can u relate the VGA drivers that cause this overheating with the PSU? i doubt its the PSU. its working fine. the system is stable ONLY if i dont install the VGA drivers.

my dad's system had a 9200se in it, it's a good card but it used to overheat until he screwed a fan onto the heatsink, add a fan and i suspect your problems will be solved.

I'd be surprised if it was the Video card causing the problem(although possible)... I can also feel heat coming from my computer while playing games etc.... But not for the fact that i'm playing games, more for the fact that it's intensive on the system...

In any case, i'd say going to the store and buying an additional fan or two just to make you feel a little safer might be one way of attacking the problem.

but that still dosnt explain why the card didnt overheat when i first bought it. the system was perfectly stable the first two month, using the factory settings. but then i relized that my hard disk wasnt partitioned (C only. so i formated and partitioned it into C: D: and E: and then i had to install the drivers from the begining. since then the problem was chasing me until now. 8 month for trying to find a solution thats really a headache. so i just thought of trying the card on another system. maybe it will work. if it works good and stable without any overheats and restarts, then the card is alrite and i would suspect on something else. if it dosnt work then the card needs a fan or is defective. i'll give u some updates when i do this thankx alot guyz

Anyone, and I mean anyone, who expects to play a game with a 9200 and no fan is a moron.

You know why your 9600 ran fine without a fan Alex? Theres this thing called a heatsink built onto the 9600's (or atleast every 9600 I have run into). But still, anyone who runs a GPU with no fan is a moron straight and true. You deserve to have it fried.

Edit:

There is an actual name for the error of no fan on a GPU, it's called a "MOC" error. I'll let you try and guess what MOC means.

well no offence to ur polite speech there Eric T, but ATI dosnt design a VGA card with no fan so u can just look at it. and plus, i DO have a heatsink built into my GPU and its a very large one too. plus there's 60% of all good quality VGA cards that dont have fans work very well without any over heating. and plus why the hell r u mad? whats ur problem! just post a thread and let it out.

...

"Dosen't design a VGA video card with no fan"

I'm just gonna mosey on out and leave this alone. I hear there are some classes though that can fix that "MOC" error you have.

Edit:

Can't help myself-

Quote: "plus there's 60% of all good quality VGA cards that dont have fans work very well without any over heating"

And you get your stats.... where? The last VGA card I have ever ran without a fan, and it ran well, was my ATI Rage 128 (thats going backa few years people ). Even my Matrox G450 runs a fan... when it fails (It = Fan), the GPU fails.

I'd like to find some proof of this "60%" somewhere.

Just incase, its overheating cause it can't handle anything, I suggest turning down the AGP to 2x if you have it at 4x... etc

The less power, the less heat

This happened with a number of GeForce FX users a while ago. After a Driver update, numerous people with Fanless models started having system hangs and reboots when playing Shader games.

Turned out the Drivers were Over-Clocking cards. A later release fixed the problem, but it did take a month's waiting. I would suggest Un-Installing your Drivers and Re-Installing your old version.

I'd like to post a correction:

Some models of the 9200se Do not have a fan (depends on the make). The one I had run (and my brother now runs) does have a fan, which was stock. I purchased it from walmart a while ago. His 9200sapphire Pro also has a fan (which is probably the best bargain card out there IMO).

But as always, you can buy a cheap fan for it, and it'll help it run.

i remember i was so sad because i couldnt play deus x

heh anyway, im going to buy a Radeon 9600PRO my motherboard only supports AGP 2.0 any chanses it will run smooth?
i made a lot of research and the card should support AGP 2.0 as well as 3.0, but you guys think i will get any problems? like, i dont want to spend 100$ on a card that will not work

well, as long as it has a fan attached to the GPU i think u shouldnt run into problems. and make sure u update the drivers every now and then. but read the driver manuals before installing. make sure it dosnt overheat. dont fall in the same hole i fell in.

well people, here the report i told u earlier. about trying the card on another system.
cpu : 1.8Ghz
RAM : 384MB

result : working perfect.
i even benchmarked it with 3Dmark 2003. this is soo confusing. the system is placed in a hot environment without any fans or coolings. and the system didnt halt or restart and there is no overheating when playing games. any explainations?

whats the speed of the AGP slot on the MOBO of the second computer and what were you running it at?

i've noticed there r some devices that have same IRQs and same memory addresses and same I/O ports. specially my VGA card. can this be the problem to overheating and make sudden restarts? here's an example of what i'm talking about:

I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 PCI bus
I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 Direct memory access controller

I/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DF Intel(R) 82865G\PE\P Processor to AGP Controller - 2571
I/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DF RADEON 9200 SERIES

IRQ 16 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D2
IRQ 16 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24DE

IRQ 17 Intel(R) 82801EB SMBus Controller - 24D3 (Intel(R) SMBus 2.0 Driver)
IRQ 17 SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio

IRQ 18 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D7
IRQ 18 Intel(R) 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers

IRQ 19 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D4
IRQ 19 Generic SoftK56

Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF PCI bus
Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF Intel(R) 82865G\PE\P Processor to AGP Controller - 2571
Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF RADEON 9200 SERIES

I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BB Intel(R) 82865G\PE\P Processor to AGP Controller - 2571
I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BB RADEON 9200 SERIES

when i tested my VGA card on that other system there wasnt any conflicts or sharing IRQs, Coincidence?

ok. here's the solution to my problem. i'm posting this to help anyone with the similar symptoms. (PC restarts randomly. over heating. restarting when playing games or high graphics. restarting when over loading or Blue Death Screens).
my solution was replacing the Power Supply. i think there was a voltage problem with the old one. as soon as i replaced it, things are stable until now. no restarts since then. i also replaced the CPU Fan with a bigger one. just to make sure things are going to b ok in the future.
i hope i helped
