If your below 256mb, go for ram, otherwise a graphics card would make more of a difference.

Go for a graphics card first - I mean I can run Doom3 in 256mb, but only if my card is upto scratch. 256mb is actually enough to be getting on with, and the price of memory can fluctuate a lot - so just wait on a bargain for your memory and get a graphics card now.

My experience is Ati graphic cards have less driver problems. I'd
get Ati over Nvidia any day.

You can get a 5200FX card for peanuts these days, that's all I use right now as I'm slowly upgrading, but it runs the current games on my 1.6ghz machine very nicely. I haven't had any issues with it, but I imagine that the higher spec ATI cards will outperform nVidia cards - so if you've got money to spend, go with ATI, if your on a budget, go with nVidia.

I've found that nVidia cards are better for DBPro, if that counts for much.

Or spend the £70 on vodka and get your parents drunk while convincing them to swap PC's with you.

You could sell that garaphics card on ebay. They're pretty damn rare!

A new mobo + cpu + gcard + RAM isn't upgrading your PC, it's replacing it. Just so you don't go and do something silly, I'll warn you right now that a modern graphics card almost assuredly won't have a slot on your old motherboard.

I don't recall any P1 mobos having agp 4x slots, so that is why I warned you. But if you're absolutely sure about it... What mobo do you have?

at any rate, a gfx card on that system won't help you.. look at the minimum requirements for your gfx card

I got a nice mobo/ram/cpu for about 150 usd including shipping..

The very new cards use PCI-E or PCI-X (can't remember which now, damn confusing naming conventions). These won't work in regular old PCI slots. Old PCI cards will work in them, but not the other way around. So until you tell us which mobo you have and which cards you're looking at, we can't help you much.

According to Amptron, who made that mobo, it has 3 PCI slots in it. No AGP available. No PCI-E/X.

So basically, you're not going to find any new vid cards that will work on your system. The best you're likely to find that will work with your system is a GeForce MX 64MB.

You need an entirely new system, not just a graphics card.

This board has 2x x16/x1 PCI-Express, and 3x PCI 2.1

This board has 1x AGP8x, and 5x PCI 2.1

Hopefully now you can see the difference of what your Motherboard should support. This said, your manual should explain at the start what it supports. Most do.

On-board Graphics Chips can be AGP with out the need for a real AGP Slot.

that's a reasonable pci gfx card and it's cheap, only dx8.1 but it about the best you'll get on pci.

You can get a PCI version of the FX 5200, not a fast card, but it'll let you run all the nifty shader effects that DBpro supports and anything is better than the onboard graphics most PCs come with.

Just one problem with that... the 5200 is crap even in AGP, so in PCI...

Heh, just noticed that the GPU is likely faster than his CPU.

Anyhoo, the point is not that he can't upgrade in some fashion, it's that any upgrade is not likely to make a difference in such an old system.
