Ok, so I decided to "upgrade" from 2k to winXP, because I was having troubles trying to run a lot of games (figured it was driver problems with 2k)

Well, since I've only a 2gb disk that I want to use as my primary drive, I figured I'd just move the pagefile over to second drive, and I should have somewhere between 200 and 300 mb open, which would be plenty room.

In SP1 that was no prob, moved the pagefile over to my special "s" drive, and that was that, I did have to manually delete the pagefile.sys file from the c drive, that was no prob.

Now, however, after going to sp2, I have my pagefile on the "s" drive, but it STILL wants to make one on the c drive, at 200 mb no less.. so here I am with 20mb left on the c drive x_x, I can't even install the drivers I need x_x

I moved the pagefile to my d drive figuring maybe it wanted a larger page file than 200mb, but nope, that didn't work..

I can't get rid of the pagefile from c.. any ideas?

See attached screenie.

Use SP1?

Seriously though, I had a 2GB drive with a WinXP SP1 install on it. Tried upgrading to SP2, and the upgrade process told me there wasn't enough room for it. So my advice is to stick with SP1 til you get a new HD, then install an SP2 WinXP image.

I got around that by downloading the sp2 IT install thing to my second hdd, and then running it with the /n switch, (and when you extract it, it extracts all the temp files to the current drive it's on, (either that or it extracts to the drive with the most space)) which allows you to install without making a backup. I also removed wmp, the .net and some other stuff, to allow breathing room while sp2 installed, and then installed all that junk back on... with all the updates and everything, it should leave you with 200 mb to spare on a 2gb hdd... but alas, the swapfile is my doom Guess I gotta reformat this sucker.. again..
I'll wait a little bit though, to see if anyone has a solution

There has to be a swap file on C drive if I remember correctly. Plus, make sure you have actually moved the file over.

nah, I removed it from within safemode..

I even tried disabling the swap file, rebooting to safemode, removing the swap file from the c drive (there was no leftover swap file on the d drive) then in safemode, I turned the swap file back on, on the d drive, and rebooted..

didn't fix it.

yarr.. wtf x_x

Found an article (a bug blog, actually) describing my situation..

He stated that the two possible updates were KB831167 or KB840374

Well uninstalling KB840374 didn't do it.. and KB831167 isn't on my uninstall list x_x

Ah well, at least with sp1 I have 100mb to spare, should be enough room until me new hdd..

Does anyone else have this happening who puts their pagefile on a different partition?

If you do, and if your windows is upto date, you can check for sure by trying to delete pagefile.sys from the root directory of the drive you have your pagefile assigned to.

If it deletes, (or if one's not there) then you too have this bug, and you may as well remove custom pagefile, because windows totally ignores your pagefile setting.

If you can't remove it, and you don't have a pagefile.sys file on the root of your c drive and you're running an upto date copy of windows.. then you must be lucky

heh, sorry for letting this topic continue

The bug occured because disk 2 I discovered was "dynamic" rather than "basic"

Bunch of rubbish x_x

Anyway, problem solved

Can now move my pagefile around no probs.
