the title says most of it but anyway
and by commercial i mean like it is sold or found at walmart or somehtign like that or it is a freeware thing on most of the freeware sites and is voted failry high by users

so what really makes it from that step of hobbyist work to commercial work

quit hiting the computer; computers can only do what they are told so we must be telling them to do wrong things

If we're talking about games... high end graphical features, good graphics (not the same thing), high quality audio & audio features, wide compatiblity, easy usability, good speed, and one or more unique selling points.

It is a perilous occupation for TGC to post anything by way of a promise, as the words get etched in indestructable marble for all time.

To be honest a game doesn't need great graphics to sell well, all you need is a good quality 'game'! If it plays well, and keeps players going, the graphics become secondary. Yeah, Fable looked awesome, but were you admiring your character's scars, hair, tattoos or his underpants while hacking ugly things apart?
Unreal 2 had great visuals, but from what I heard the gameplay was very poor.

The final thing comes from the gameplay, yes the graphics will be the first thing people talk about, but it's the things that keep people playing that need the most consideration!

hmmm
here is my opinion
it would have to have that windows feel of a gui
it would have to be extremely stable
you should not have to type a lot
it should be able to open files with the open with... thing
the setup should be advanced with many options
if it is at a store than it should include any apis needed such as dx9c
it should have a very well developed website and forum/support staff
a 1-800 number is always nice
Anti pirating systems such as serial codes

I'm guessing you really mean Professional Quality, because I've seen and played some pretty dire attempts at games over the years.

Often when a Development House makes a poor game, it gets bundled with a graphcis card. When Lonewolf companies get published, they get given a $10 sticker and sold at Wal*Mart.

I think there are some much better Freeware/Shareware games on the market than budget published.

Dedication is the first step in making a commercial quality program/game. Next comes some talent, and a bit a of a work ethic and some coffee help too. Some good people to work with can help also. And time, lets not forget time. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, and it wasn't built by one person either.
