Does anyone remember these sweet times? When 3d was almost unheard of and 2d ruled the scene? I was playing super mario world the other day and enjoyed it quite a bit. is it just me or sometimes a simple 2d game is better then the latest graphicly wowing game?

Yeah that age was good. The RPGs were good and the other fun games. Plus the game industry was not like hollywood back then.

Actually it was quite harder for a hobbyist to develop games back then, as there wasn't any "DarkBasic Pro" type product available (that I can recall). Most games were coded in assembler, especially for the consoles. Plus you have to remember that stunning visuals back then, while seemingly simpler than todays, are still stunning. You still had to be a code guru to pump anything nice out of 2D. I remember reading all the tricks they had to use to make Donkey Kong Country look so spectacular--- amazing.

Nah, wished I'd got off my ar*e in the spectrum days, and basically learnt to program the assembler package I bought. Kids like 14 years of age created classic games in their bedrooms. On their own. In like a couple of weeks or so. And they are legendry people. Sigh. Manic Miner was so bloody simple for instance....

Nah you want earlier than that when games were produced by talented individuals and not faceless companies.....Braben, Braybrook, Fasoulas and Minter.

Most people probably know that Jeff Minters still going but anyone know what happened to Andrew Braybrook? Probably bought up by EA

I can't remember which games we owned, but I remember playing super mario kart, super mario all stars, krusty's super fun house, super street fighter turbo 2(or whatever name it had), a football game that I think was called striker, and some other games that I can't remember.

When I was old enough to play videogames seriously we were just exiting out of the SNES era and all I had was a Sega Genesis with Sonic 2, Indiana Jones, NBA Jam, and Tiny Toons. However, just recently I heard my friend was selling his SNES so I bought it off him for just $25. It came with:
the system
1 controller,
a game genie+manual
Mario All Stars + World
Mario Kart
Starfox
Super Off Road: The Baja
Turn and Burn: No-fly Zone
Top Gear
Dirt Trax FX
Tecmo Super Bowl

and then I went and got FF3 off ebay.

Loads of fun.

jeez, bear, you had all the greats

Quote: "Street Fighter II - completed (i'm unbeatable)"

We'll see how unbeatable you are when you're fighting me as Ryu, I'm unbeatable

MK series on the sega with the three button controller? Oh, I'm god

I have, btw:

FF: Mystic Quest (didn't realize it was teh crap rpg when I bought it But being my first rpg, I didn't know better that it wasn't "great", I got good use from it)

Secret of Lufia
Chrono Trigger
Star Fox
Super Mario World (all levels completed, even the tough one to get to, *in the ocean)
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Star Trek : DS9
Star Trek : The Next Generation

I forget what it's called, but it was made after a sci-fi series of a cop who travels in time to catch baddies.. That was a great game, though you'd never think

A bunch of others that I can't recall off hand

I did not like the SNES much. Brother's had some good games on it though. Among my favourites are Super Bomberman and FIFA. All of us got to play at the same time.
Did not like Mario Kart or Super Street Fighter 2 much. They always cheated at the games!

Sensible Soccer was awesome on the Snes as it was just a tad easier on that than other platforms. I know people who went out and got a Snes just for sensi.

Have no idea. Back in the 80's he used to go to a computer club in my home town in Essex for a while and let us playtest the games he was making. Stuff like Uridium. They were great times.

I think modern developers could learn alot from those old Snes games.

The Flintstones on the Snes probably had one of the best difficulty levels there is, other than Viewtiful Joe.

Also, the recent game Donkey Kong Jungle Beat had nice visuals but is apparently too short as a result of it. I think Nintendo missed a great oppurtunity where they could have just slapped bongo controls on the original Donkey Kong Country games on the Snes, that would've been brilliant! I mean, they made GBA remakes for them so why not this!

Simple... yet fun!

Sensible Software are converting Sensi for mobile phones, and the Bitmap Brothers are converting their 16-bit classics to GBA - I can imagine the sensi boys making a fortune.

Mobile gaming is advancing a lot, but hopefully it'll stay largely 2D long enough for us to get these cool 2D games, because the crap that we've got now is no good - Splinter Cell in 2D is a joke, a 16-bit classic is always gonna sell more copies because you fell like your actually getting a game for your money.

Anything that distracts mobile users from the freakin frog or sweety chick will be welcome.

I was trying to decide whether to get a Sega Genesis or an SNES... then... (yell it with me) MORTAL KOMBAT!!

The SNES one kicked ass over the sega. When me and my buddies got MK2 we used to use kombat to decide which show on tv we'd watch.I think we played it like for an month straight.

I got pretty all up into Contra III too. That game rocked.

And I think MK for SNES didn't have blood--- you had to unlock it or something. MK for Genesis was faster, bloodier, and it sold tons of systems. My cousin even had a briefcase where he had his Genesis, controllers, and MK tucked into velcro sleeves. It's hilarious when I think about it now, but back then I was envious of him.

My cousins were the kids whose parents bought them any system when it first came out. They had the NES, the SNES, and the Genesis right away. My parents didn't let my sister and I get any systems

Best SNES game ever was Shadowrun, although a lot of people hadn't heard of it. Mechwarrior was another good one... I dug how you could go hang out at the zero-zero bar before missions, that ruled

I think Shadowrun was the game that made me want to make the kind of games I'm making now... a big city, non-linear, you can go where you and do what you want... that game put me on the course, Grand Theft Auto III paved the road, and the plethora of GTA knockoffs as of late (Getaway, True Crime, etc.) made me realize that it's my calling, or something hehe. Someone needs to make a modernized version of Shadowrun, but without ruining it. Was that a double-negative?

Quote: "I've never actually played it on the console though, only on an emulator"

Which emulator do you use? There's quite a few although I'm told that NESticle is the best NES/ SNES emulator. I'm thinking about downloading one, after my nerves settle (my Vaio just got over a bad virus, which I spoke of in a diff. thread)

Shigeru Miyamoto. I think.

Quote: "Did you also know that Donkey Kong was originally going to be called "Monkey Kong" but there was a typo in production? The more you know..."

That's just a myth. Besides, it was a garbled fax to America. The "truth" is that Miyamoto looked in a Japanese-English dictionary and found "Donkey" (with "Stubborn" listed as one meaning) and "Kong" ("Monkey" was listed).

Donkey Kong = Stubborn Monkey, if you want to beleive it.

Back on subject...
I loved Pilotwings, until I found out some git wrote all the passwords in the book (second-hand)!
I also remember a couple of wierd Konami games... Pop 'N' Twinbee (cutesy vertical shooter) and Cybernator (mecha game), which I think was called Assault Suits Valken or something in Japan. End of Level 1 gave me the creeps, because after you beat the boss, it drops to the floor and breaches the hull of the space station you're in, leaving you to drop through onto your ship while hundreds of men are sucked into space. Made up for it with a level where you fight the enemy while re-entering Earth's atmosphere.

actully, the mortal kombat for nintindo had no blood whatsoever, as nintindo wanted a clean family game console image. Anyone ever get simcity for nintindo? (yes i think its a ripoff of computer's first) boy, how that series has changed.

You're right, the MegaDrive/Genesis version had a special code, which the parents had to keep away from their little s**ts. . MK2 on the SNES had blood, though.

Shame I only mastered the arena-specific uppercut fatalities and Johnny Cage's Low Blow.

Geek fanboy senses tingling, couldn't let this one go. It wasn't going to be Monkey Kong. Shigeru Miyamoto wanted a more interesting way to say "Silly Monkey" so he utilized Kong from King Kong, and when looking up Silly in a thesaurus or something he found "ass" and substituted it with Donkey.

Devry talked to my IT class this past quarter and said that one year their graduate project was to make a game that would become the beloved Donkey Kong. Hmmmmmmm... I wondered, Did they bolt the arcade machines together or debug the high score routines? Stupid Devry.

Sorry about the Monkey Kong mixup... that's what G4 said so I repeated it.

EA is buying everything! As indie developers we should all create a coalition to keep them from buying us out! We're next, I know it... the NFL, then ESPN, then Ubi... indie developers are around the corner!

I desperately want to find this game we played when I was younger. It was an isometric perspective SNES game... can't remember the title though. It played sort of how Shadowrun played, but it was squad based and set in the future. It's controls were similar to the Police Quest games of the mid-90's; point a bunch of guys to do something, then another bunch, then tell them all to go at it. All I remember was battling a giant robot, and entire squads of my guys being wiped off the map. I never did defeat that robot.
