------------------------------------------

I need to research some information on Australia, so I was wondering if any native can help me out.

I would like to know of a famous short story, poem, folktale, and novel that represents the country...preferabbly written by a native.

Also need a few big cultural customs that take place in the country.

Where could I find music that represents the country?

Also what is an easy Australian food to make?

I am from the United States of America and really do not know a whole lot about Australia other than its location and Kangaroo. I would greatly appreciate some help locating the above. Thanks.

Well I have searched google quite extensively and most novels and such that even come close to representing the country are all writting by Americans Or English...and I am really trying to find something more authentic.

famous story or foklore? Anything by banjo patterson...like "the man from snowy river". Thats a FAMOUS tale.

Famous cultural customs or idiosyncratic behaviours? Drinking beer, having a barbie, and watching the footy. Happens everywhere.

Music? Jimmy Barnes, Men at Work, and Midnight Oil. They are pretty much the rock cross-section of australian music. Slim Dusty was a dud, cause he was country, but I guess he was famous. Wasnt one of the Crowded House dudes australian too?

Easy food to make? Snag with sauce. Every Aussie has one of these at a barbie. Barbies being the Australian equivalent of a 'grill' in america. Snag with sauce is a sausage on a piece of bread with tomato sauce on it. None of that Ketchup crap, just tomato sauce. Lol, talking about it is making me hungry...
Another not-so-easy-to-make thing is a meat pie. I think meat pies are even more famous than snags. EVERYONE has a meat pie with sauce at footy games, and i mean EVERYONE! But they arent easy to make...easy to buy though...

So yeah, I hope that has helped a bit. If you have any other questions, just ask away

regards
zac

im sure he isn't meaning abbo, he just wants someone from the country. anyway if you want a story then what about ned kelly, that would be easy for him to find, mick jagger played him ages ago. Also music wise yeah banjo patterson was a famous aussie poet/writer, so a lot of his tales and songs, (did banjo do waltzing matilda?), are pretty aussie. As for culture, we are actually pretty multiultural, there is no real definitive aussie culture other than cricket i suppose, of and afl, but thats not as widespread as us victorians want it to be. and for food, the same thing, though prolly a few snags in bread would be good, oh and lamb chops. to make those, you need:

sausages
lamb chops
bread
tomato sauce
a barbeque.

put the sausages and the chops on the barbeque (obviously hot) and cook. to serve, have the party goers line up with a slice of bread and a paper plate, serve sausage on bread and point to the tomato sauce (usually on a table nearby), then place a chop or two on the plate, repeat for each party goer. there is your average barbeque, if you wanna get fancy get shazza to cook up some coleslaw or potato salad. serve in a large bowl with big spoons to distribute. thats an aussie barbeque. (note: if shazza isnt available just grab teh next best shiela.)

vegemite's is an aquired taste, and personally i think it goes nicely with honey. A lot of Australians will disagree with me there though

Chip Butty's are also quite good, although i don't know what other countries also enjoy it. Its basically a sandwich with a filling of thick chips (like fish and chip style chips, not those tiny mcdonalds chips), often with some tomato sauce. We're such an elegant country

You have to build up a resistance to vegemite to like it, eat it in small doses until you feel its mighty power taking over you and only then will you understand the full awesome taste of vegie mites!

Correct, the book is about the invasion of Australia by an unnamed country (although you're meant to assume a tiny, overpopulated country like Japan or Korea). The main plot revolves around a group of teenagers that were out camping in the bush when the invasion takes place, once they return they find their town has been taken over and they need to survive and hinder the invading forces without being caught. Although it sounds extreme, it's very realistic and the book is an excellent read. There are also a number of sequels that are as equally good.

Wondering A little bit about Jobs in Australia. How well are degrees from foreign colleges(USA) weighed in Australia when it comes to finding a job? Are they just as good as degrees from Australian university's...or do employers not care what country the university attended is in? Btw, I am not talking about a big famous university like "Harvard" or "Yale". Please shed some light on this for me.

Topic two:
I am doing a little bit of life planning for a few years down the road and am wondering what types of things are all required for Australian immigration.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, you westerners don't have any idea, do you?
lol, I'm just messin with ya

Getting a University degree is the same as getting a university degree from anywhere else in the world.

The employer wants to know what classes you took during your degree, and if you took different classes than any Aust Uni offers, then you'd be held in different regard, but if you took the same, then you'd be in the same stead.
However, I'd say that Aust employers may be more inclined to hire a "Fresh-outta-uni" Australian before a "Fresh-outta-uni" Foreign person. But, that pretty much rely's COMPLETELY on what kind of person the employer is.

If I was running a business, and had to employ people, I wouldn't care about nationality, race, home-town, anything... As long as they have the skills I'm after, then they're hired

Jess.

Ok, the presentation I have been working on is finally due tomorrow. I am still missing one thing, music! I have searched all over the internet and am unable to find a free Australian mp3 file to play. Just any type of Australian-based music what i need, have to play it for 5 mins in class. Any clue as to where I might find what I am looking for?
