I got my PSP today, which came with a 32mb memory stick... After trying a few different methods of putting video's and music onto the memory stick for playback, it simply doesnt recognize the files...

I'm guessing that the memory stick that comes with the psp isnt a media formatted memory stick, and that i'll need to buy a new one?

Could someone please confirm this?

Looked in the instruction booklet and figured out how to use music aswell as photo's... The video's still remain something to be unseen... It seems PSP's only recognize Mpeg 4 format, i've tried a few different conversion tools and still cant get it working on the system.

Figured it out and got it working perfectly... for any others having problems running video's on the psp, check here.

@Osiris - UMD movies arent available yet for purchase (besides the spiderman 2 that come in some of the bundles), i hear they'll be available sometime in April.

Just for the hell of it, i'll add this link in too, as it's useful, and probably will be for most people in the future..

Yeah that conversion software couldn't be easier to use. Great results as well.

I've just installed the 1.50 firmware update on my Jap PSP and everything now loads up to 2x faster.....yay

Nope. I could be a boring git, others might agree with me, I dunno, I just don't find any of it funny other than there was no point to it. But that was wierd funny, not funny ha ha.

I just sold my nintendo ds and bought a psp and i had trouble getting media files to play at first but after i read the book that comews with it, I was able to play the files. You have to make a file called "MUSIC", a file called "PHOTO" and a file called "VIDEO" inside the psp folder. You then put the media files in those folders. My memory stick has 2 photos, 4 songs and a save game from Metal Gear Acid and it is already full. So, if u want to use the PSP as a media player, u should buy a bigger memory stick.

Obviously you didnt read the instructions very well (As it doesnt tell you this informaton about video files)

You are indeed correct about how to get the PSP to recognize music and photo's by creating individual folders with their names however this is not the same case with video's.

First, you'll need to create a new directory in the root folder of your memory stick called "MP_ROOT." You'll then need to create a "100MNV01" directory inside the MP_ROOT directory. You'll put your video files in this 100MNV01 directory.

Before you go copying over files, they need to be named properly. Video files must be named in the format of M4Vxxxxx.MP4 where "xxxxx" is any five-digit number, like 00001 or 01323. The converter will also create a file with the extension THM. The THM file is a thumbnail image of your video that will show up in the PSP's menu to make it easier to browse videos, but you have to name the THM file to match your newly renamed video file. So if you're renaming "goodsong.MP4" to "M4V00006.MP4," you'll also need to rename "goodsong.THM" to "M4V00006.THM" for it to still work.

I just read the section in the book on photos and music because i really dont have any video files to put on the psp. But since photos and music just had folders named "Photos" and "Music", i assumed that video would eb the same way.

I noticed there is a option on the game menu that lets u boot games from the memory stick. How does that work and where can u download homebrew games to play off the memory stick?, i searched google and i havent found any good information.

The 3d graphics on the PSP are -next- to Playstation 2 graphics, though not quite. In any case, it really does look great.

If you're not only talking about the 3d graphics, but the clarity of the screen aswell... The LCD screen that they use is absolutely gorgeous, especially noticeable while watching UMD movies such as Spiderman 2.

The screen however has a coating on it which seems to collect fingerprints, dust... and if you're not careful with handling it, scratches.

Truthfully, i was thinking that the 3d graphics would be impressive and the display screen would be as -old- as any of the other systems, but it turned out opposite only in the sense of the screen, and out of all handhelds in the market.. The PSP shines with it's LCD display.

I'd say the graphics were closer to those of the Dreamcast, Merix, but that's just my opinion.

I have a question i've been trying to get answered... For those who have a psp, if you have access to an external USB hard drive, could you try attaching it and see if you're able to access the hard drive?

It seems like such a simple thing to do, and therefore probably wont work, but if it does for one reason or another.. Kaboom.. a nice simple(and potentially cost effective) way of storing files and viewing them on your psp.

I doubt it. From what I've heard, the PSP USB port currently only works as a device and not a host. Besides, even if you did connect an external hard drive, there isn't any sort of system in place to let you access the files.

Heya, I also have a PSP and I can anwser all your questions on how to put Music, Video, pictures on your memory card.

First off I suggest buying a 512 mb memory duo stick. Now get this neato program called PSP Video 9 which can be found here!
http://www.pspvideo9.com/

This program is free and amazing. It allows you to convert video files to PSP format and then it allows you to convert the files via USB cable to your PSP. Just to give you an example of the compressing power this program packs, I recorded a movie called Euro Trip ( 1h 27min, 2.32Gb) and compressed with PSP video 9 using the lowest quality to 168 mb!!!

Music, if you want to put music on your PSP convert the music file to MP3 format, then transfer the music in a folder called "Music" to your PSP's memory stick duo via USB cable.

Photos same as music put the photos in a folder called "Photo" then put it onto your memory stick duo.

I hope that helps all PSP owners and any questions feel free to ask.

Skeletor.. that's not necessarily only the compressment power of that individual application.. 3GP(i believe it is) is also very good, and recommended by Gamestop..

In any case, i thought a lot about how it made the files so small.. Simple reason is, the movies that we usually have are made for screens that are 15"+.. The psp is 4.3"'s... As it converts it for a MUCH smaller screen than normal it's safe to assume that the file size will be substantially lower aswell.
