I was browsing the internet today and I came across Knoppix. It sounds really good - a Linux distribution that runs from a CD-ROM. I've been thinking buying a copy of it, so I can see what Linux is like, however I'd like some more information before I buy it. Think you can help?

1. Can I boot Knoppix from a CD-ROM even if I have another OS installed?
2. Will it support Pentium III (733 MHz) with 128 MB of RAM?
3. Does it come with a GUI?
4. Once I take out the CD-ROM will I be able to boot normally (Windows 98SE)?

Thanks a lot for your help, oh and one last thing - is it, in your opinion, any good?

We have a computer that uses Damn Small Linux. A varient of Knoppix/Debian. It can fit on a business card CD-Rom.

Step 1. Download it from the website.
Step 2. Burn to CD
Step 3. Insert CD and select Boot From CD/DVD on your boot menu.

It has an option to install to Hard Disk, or just save the Unpackaged ISO to Hard Disk and load from there on boot.

Running with out installing requires RAM. You will need a minimum of 128MB RAM to run it. If you wish to browse online then I would recommend a minimum of 256MB RAM.

Knoppix is pretty good - the last one I tried, like all the other Linuxes, couldn't cope with the network card and sound card.

To add on to what squidy's saying, make sure your hardware is supported! If you have a winmodem, you pretty definately won't be able to get online.. if you've got a compatible nic card then It'd be worth it.. If you've got a compatible sound card, then you'll get to listen to music As for the other stuff.. it really just depends on if you want to utilize it.. your gfx card needs to be compatible if you want to play games.. etc etc..

What Required said is correct. Knoppix is pretty good and is popular around the office for emergency access to the system if we have a kernel problem. However, recently I've started using FreeSBIE (http://www.freesbie.org/) instead of Knoppix so I can access my FreeBSD and Linux computers' hard drives (Knoppix doesn't like BSD drives).

I've run Knoppix several times with my PC. It does abolutely nothing to your current OS. It's pretty cool, comes with KDE.

Get 15 new commands, all the date / time commands left out of DBPro for free!

Depends if Knoppix autodetects and mounts your Windows hard drive partition. You will most likely not be able to delete or modify existing files on your Windows mount, but this can be adjusted and at least you can save files on the drive.

One question: Why buy Knoppix when the download is free from their server?

i put knoppix on a PII 300 with a 4x speed cdrom with knoppix and it was shocking , i know its the cdrom causing the grief. It detected all my hardware including the scsi cards for my scanner and raid.


Use any BSD equivalent MACOSX

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself

BUY it!? You're getting ripped off! It's free. Download it

I've used it a number of time since I downloaded it at the start of the year, it's bloody awesome.

Alot of the hardware detection problems can be sorted using the command switch's at boot ( I had to do a bit of research so that I could get my USB stick and Network card's recognised ).

You can modify, delete and add any file or folder you like to your HDD.
Just unmount the drive, set it to allow full access, then remount the drive ( it's as simple as a few clicks with KDE ).

Knoppix is great for a backup OS if something happens to your Windoze. I've used it twice to recover data after the windoze kernal died and I couldn't fix it

Give it a go, it's well worth it

On this computer I don't have a CD-RW drive, so thats why I'm not downloading it . Anyway I'm sure I'd mess up the download (I had a look - there's a lot of files in directories and stuff).

I just used it for curiosity, I wasn't planning on using it on a permanent basis.
