Yea they are all over the place:
Anim8or: www.anim8or.com
Wings3D: www.wings3d.com
G-Max: www.discreet.com

Id suggest just paying the 20 for milkshape (www.milkshape3d.com)

Milkshape is well worth it.

Is it just me or is my posting box all of a sudden left aligned instead of center? lol

Sorry to "open" this topic again but it seemed better than making a new one...

Can you convert models you make in GMax to .x or .3ds files?

Yes, but not directly.

You need to download the Tempest gamepack from the Gmax website and at least install the plugins that come with it. You will then be able to export to .MD3 format which many file conversion utilities (Milkshape, 3D Explorer) can change to .x or .3Ds files.

Sorry, I am trying to decide which free modeler to get, GMax or anim8tor. You see, there is a faint connection... Isn't there?

I use Gmax, myself. I found Anim8tor unintuitive, but that's just a personal preference. You CAN use Gmax models in games with a minor workaround, plus it allows you to use most of the Scripts that work with 3D Studio Max, such as Chilliskinner, which makes texturing much, much easier.

There are also tons of tutorials and support out there for Gmax, which I think is just going to grow over time.

Just my opinions.

Am I right in thinking GMax is just a cut down version of 3D Max? What is missing?

Yes, it is essentially 3D Max Lite. Most of what's missing is the higher end graphics functions and rendering. It's primary focus is game modelling, so it has limited abilities otherwise (for example, animation controls are fairly basic, though functional). Personally, I think it's great and makes a great stepping stone to learn 3D Max if you think you might ever want (or can afford) to try that out.

Well, both are free, so you should probably just get both. I can't seem to get Anim8or to export animation information, though. I'm downloading JTEdit, another freeware modeler, right now. http://www.jtgame.com/jtedit/jteditmain.html

Around $4000. Dont even try cracking it because the models show up in code

Or else I will just have to add you to my list of crackers to never talk to or help

anim8or, wings3d are free but they cant animate .x files or .3ds files and gmax has a lot of strings attached to it.

I use Milkshape 3D, and it's good!, the only thing you can't do in Milkshape is that you can texture a pic with transparent in it.

You load up all the objects and make meshes from them all, MAKE MESH FROM OBJECT. Then use ADD LIMB to add them all to the initial object, and LINK LIMB to create the hierarchy. Use OFFSET LIMB to get the limbs in the right places, and then ROTATE LIMB to animate them.

Once I was but the learner,
now, I am the Master.

Milkshape is the idea solution for most people, its cheap and quite powerful, in addition it is updated fairly quickly and new export/import plugings are developed all the time. A good addition to your 3d tool kit would be 3d Unwrap.. for your texturing needs. The next in line I feel would be 3D Canvas, quite powerful and updated on an ongoing basis, although a bit more expensive then Milkshape. Softy 3d is a neat little program if you want an interesting and easy way to make oraganic looking models. I would realy stay away from playing around with Gmax exports.. its not realy legal if you look through the agreements. I think for a 100 USD you can realy equip yourself with very decent software. (for those of you who need a great 2d software.. use GIMP there is a windows version and its just as powerful as most of the commercial software, and the great thing is that its free) Here is my budget development package:

Milkshape 3D www.milkshape3d.com
Canvas 3D PRO www.amabilis.com
Softy 3D www.softy3d.com
Ultimate Unwrap3D www.unwrap3d.com
CharacterFX www.insanesoftware.de
Light Map Maker www.windssoft.com

Cheers,

DrD

well, i personally do it the make mesh from object and add limb way, you can save the mesh and then just use a load command in you're final program to save space in whatever fantasic toys you're making, the one problem i've been having tho and pls don't call me thick (I'll cry), I can't for the life of me work out how to texture .3ds models, i know it's gonna be ded simple but i still can't work out how its done, i use 3ds max if that helps......

Murdock: You dont. Gmax is fussy. Plus, you cant use the models in a game without a $50,000 license.

Kfoong: Yea just load them all up, have one 'base' object, attach the rest as limbs, then you could use Kent's animation function, but I would just recommend making your own function like "walk" but moving the limbs. Or use Kents thing, never have before but I bet its good

Gmax models can be used in games but only if you don't plan on selling them they must be distributed freely.
