I moved 4hrs out of home, away from the coast, into Country Bumkin area for this course, so why can't you move 60minutes ( on the plane ) away from home into bumkinville as well, eh?

My solution?

Help after they've waited. That way it makes them actually have patience, respect you and gives you the power.

I also do other methods but its hard to explain.

Rich

I was in a small c++ course...but it wasn't very helpful...as my class was full of computer-illiterate folks. So within a week of the class, I knew more than my teacher did...kind of sad, but o well.

Why am i mentioning this? Cause im stupid and don't care about anything but my problems.

In our college, most people HAVE to do key skills AS level. I got out of it as I do computing (which is also pretty much a waste of time if you are a fairly competent programmer). The key skills coursework consists of:

1.) Using google to make a search for something
2.) Creating and editing a word document
3.) Doing various other easy crap
4.) Taking 300 or so screen "dumps" to prove you can do all of the above

I don't have anything against people who can't use a computer, people who moan about it are idiots, but when they make you do patronising, timewasting tasks like key skills, you can't help but wonder quite how stupid some people are.

Isn't it? Wasn't it? Marvellous!

You can do some pretty good things with Java. For example I made a Tron lightcycle game using OpenGL in Java. Java is also the main language used for mobile games development.

all the comp classes at my school are like "computer applications" or "keyboarding", where they teach you how to use microsoft word, and excel! and how to type! We dont get any good stuff till 11th grade with computer science, hehe.

Video games…they can take you places unreachable, impossible, unfeasible. They put you in the book...they put you in the movie...they put you in a world, a world that before could only be imagined.

You people do not even begin to know how much I loath my Computer Engeneering class. I whine about it to everybody.

My school hardly offers anything on computers, so I figured this class would be fun. It taught me how much I really know about computers...not much. -_-'

Yeah, well you know whats really sad, when the overlords that watch over the computers with thier ever watching software make a mistake they always blame it on hackers, one time I got in through the command prompt and changed their passwords just for fun .

OT:
does anyone know what happened to the whitehat tech website? I used to love reading their news.

Nope, a forum full of em

Yes Java is very popular, it leads on to OO, C++ for example and can be used for games.

Oh, and the reason they teach us Java first is because it's easier than C++ to a certain degree and much of the newer students to programming will find the transistion from Java to C++ much smoother than jumping straight into C++ itself. The idea is to teach key programming concepts with Java (primarily OOP in this case, so things like classes, multiple inheritance and polymorphism are covered) and then move onto C++ in the second year (but skip all the things already covered in Java). There's also the added bonus that as previously mentioned, Java is a solid language that most programmers should know simply because it has numerous versatile uses such as mobile games development, etc. Or at least that's the basic viewpoint from my Uni.

Haha,

Aww, you wish.
I think that some people ( Exeat ) might be missing the whole concept behind my course... We learn how to make games... nothing else. It's not a computer engineering course, it's not a programming course with a Game section thrown in... it is GAMES. That's it, nothing else, just games.

Just as an example, I've only been at uni for 5 weeks, and we're already learning about the psycology behind the senses with relation to games, so that we can better understand Furier Transform, and how all the very basics of visual representation of games and audio for games etc etc is done.

Oh, and did I mention that Exeat is wrong? Ok.

However, he was right about one thing - Java is used too teach OOP.
He was wrong about when we go onto C++ - we start next semester ( half way through the year, for those that don't know ). Then next year we start on DirectX I think

GAMES is what it's all about - no cheesy Computer course with a games section thrown in for good measure and to bring more nerds through... JUST GAMES. THATS IT. NOTHING ELSE. *whisper* just games.

So... yeah.

Long time ago for me all the teachers i had in my computer classes didnt know crap about computers...which made them crappy teachers how they got there degree is beyond me.

But anyhow needless to say the teachers didnt like my tinkering since i turned off all the "saftys" and when my friend "who works there" found out it was me doing that he just said "your doing that" but he didnt tell anyone because he thought it was funny...running though proxys...silly school couldnt find there ass with a map and a mirror....

If it's got a smelly concept, it makes it a smelly course. What happens if the games industry collapses on itself, you're stranded in the dirt.

On the other hand, the course I'm currently enrolled in has all the game-related subjects (yes, the same stuff as in your example) but we've also got a mix of programming and graphics-related goals. That means, in addition to all that games theory, throw in some Java, SQL, Adobe Illustrator and 3DS Max 7 just for the first year. Granted, your course is aimed at learning about games, ours is aimed at producing the missing link between a computer game programmer and a graphics artist, solving the age-old problem of segregated teams that can't communicate with eachother. But yeah, whatever, have fun.

In my IT class I'm the kind of person that everyone asks for help, and I don't mind because it's a place for learning and not everyone knows as much as I do (although that's not too much!). What really annoys me is when everyone asks me questions non-stop wihle our teacher sits on his fat ass:

BTW, at least we have good computers at school:
- P3 500mhz processor
- 32 MB RAM
- 2 GB hard drive (of which we can use 15MB to store our data)
- State-of-the-art floppy drive technology!
- 15 inch CRT monitors
- mice that only move the cursor when they want to
- keyboards with no windows button, and a missing space key cover

Don't worry. They have a special committee set up now to prevent games like another E.T getting through and forcing the entire industry onto it's face.

EDIT: Just noticed something that really pisses me of as a user...
The mods don't have the language filter, so when I quoted Exeat, it wouldn't let me post becasue he typed "$hitty" as part of his reply. (Which I had to edit with "$" instead of "s"

Thanks alot Rich.

Seriously though, we could use the landfill!

Edit: We're supposed to be responsible enough as mods to not use language like that, I just got carried away (too used to screwing with Jess on MSN)... I've edited my inappropriate post now, though. Actually, I wasn't even aware the 's' word was on the banned list.

Fishy, Yeah, I'm glad that SOMEONE finally got it! Sheesh!

Megaton,
Also, if we really need to get a point across to another user, swear words really help alot when it's not a common occurance around these boards
But, again, we're entrusted enough not to swear in every-day speak

And, yeah, me and Exeat don't actually hate eachother... He just hates me, so it's all ok

Jess.

I just really worry about all you guys taking the Bachelor of Multimedia or whatever it's called this week. Just hope you can find a job when you're done.

Good luck!

I've been screwed by an artschool/game dev school already, so I'm sticking with a plain old computer science degree...

Well mine's a double degree of BMm (Games) and BSc (Computer Science), so technically (like Jess said), I'm doing a normal Software Dev/Programming degree but with a bunch of games and graphics courses thrown in on the side. I can't see how this could be any worse than doing a normal CS degree because that's what I am doing.

But yeah, putting all that aside, you must remember that we're living in Australia, nothing can go wrong down here.

I was doing a training course for Business Admin at a (now defunct) training provider a few year ago, and after moving premises to Head Office, two computer rooms were set up, one with computer mainly with Windows 2000, and the other, full of near-486 NT machines. A bit later someone from the engineering section brought some trainees to work on the NT machines.

After they were finished, I ended up spending an hour pulling Program Files folders out of Recycle Bins and reseting wallpapers to get rid of obscene art made in Paint and deleting the offending images. Chavs.

Yeah I often hit print, scribble offending things on MS paint (I'll spare details) and set it as the desktop background.

I remember copy & pasting a few "inappropriate" images to my friend's sister's desktop. Brilliant.
