I was thinking about buying Dark Basic but I have zero programming experience.

I have some questions.

If I were to buy it do I absolutly have to use some kind of code? Is there an insert option where it is kind of like RPG Maker for PSX?

If not is the code hard to understand. Would I catch on fast or what?

So can someone advise me to some things. I am currently trying out the Dark Basic Trial Version and it seems difficult. It doesnt have any options hardly.

Is the 49.99 one good to buy? That is the DVD one not electronic.

Someone please post back telling me everything I need to know. It would be highly appreciated.

The only good way i know to learn is to experiment with snippets and examples. and if you dont know the word, look it up. that was the way i learned even though im still learning

I started almost exactly 1 month ago and I am starting on my first 3d game(not saying it will be great). But if you do get it, it will be somewhat frustrating at first, but stick with it. I recomend it!

You will definately have to do actual coding. DarkBASIC is a proper programming language designed for 3D games and applications.

However it is a variation of the BASIC (Beginners All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) language, which is the easiest programming language to learn.

Before you can start on making games you will have to start learning the language, this is not as hard as it sounds and (I find) very interesting. It will be work though.

Then you can start to make games, simple ones at first until eventually Half Life DB!!

Good Luck. And there are plenty of people here to help.

It's never as easy as it looks!

You have to code, but once you learn how you'll realize that programs like RPG maker are 3D Game Maker are very restrictive in terms of what they let you do and a real programming language is infinitely more flexible.

I also have to say, get Dark Basic Pro, not Dark Basic, from what I hear, Dark Basic Pro is better than Dark Basic. Dark Basic Pro is the $100 one.

lmntskater your problem is that your trying to load a bitmap from a directory where it does not exist Make sure your bitmap is in the same folder as your code

Also, make sure you have the bitmap or other files loaded under the media tab at bottom right screen, I think it is a blue button.

Smokie, I'm a noob but I knew enough to realise that a "Basic" type language is easier to learn than say Java, or C++. Any game creating software that is click-n-drag will be too limiting and any games you create will all have a similar look to them. I went the whole hog and bought DBpro, I'm a very long way from any sort of a game but I am really enjoying the learning curve. Try the snippets forum, see what the code does, and then play with it.
