I'm thinking of buying an AGP graphics card for my system. I have a PII 300 Mhz with 160 MB RAM and Win98SE.

Being new to the world of PC Hardware, I don't really know what card would be best for me. Can anyone please help me out in deciding?

Thanks in advance!

an agp ati 9000 for about $75 australian with 128 megs of ram is prolly as far as you can go with your motherboard. ironically your graphics card would be faster then your cpu by about 150 mhz

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself

Will installing a graphics card increase the speed of my games or just the quality? If only quality, how do I increase the speed performance?

Also, the AGP slot in my motherboard (the brown one with 3 big holes) is occupied by some card that is connected to the monitor. Is this my virge gx2? If so, how come the computer says it's a PCI (and what does PCI stand for by the way)?

Thanks

It's probally better just to buy a whole new computer, I have a P3 733Mhz and that's painfully slow.

My situation is a funny one

My Dad only uses Access and Word and that stuff so doesn't need a new computer so my only choice is to upgrade. So...

Anyway, how about the fact that my AGP slot is already occupied. My system says it has a virge gx2 but also says that's a PCI

With the spec you mentioned, its likely that your computer does not have agp. In which case you probably want to get a new motherboard, but doing this probably means you need to upgrade everything else.

I have checked my motherboard and it has a brownish slot with 3 biggish holes (diagram is included). Is this an AGP slot?

But there is still one thing - this slot is occupied by some card that is plugged to the monitor

I've included a small diagram
