3rd person
more control over the player
more moves such as dives, wall hug, ect

1st person

Please stop putting punctuation marks at either side of your sentences

All good shooters are first person, but games like Gothic work well in 3rd person.

1st person allows for better control and 3rd person allows for better views. Think you got those 2 mixed up. And if you dont believe me, play Thief 1 or 2 and then play Thief 3 in 3rd person. Youll see which is easier to control.

Personally I prefer 1st person unless its one of those MMORPGs.

I like 4th person views, which is when you control the character from several miles away while sitting in a pub.

I prefer 1st person view in Thief. It's far more immersive, and I think that's the #1 thing about the Thief games. Not that I begrudge them for putting the option in for those who prefer it

depends on how you want the person the feel about the character

1st person view allows the player to become the character so when you die its like "dam, I died!", whereas 3rd person view gives the feeling of it being the players creation. "Dam, my creation! noooo"

I still don't understand 2nd person, aren't all perspectives stories in someway? How can a perspective be a story in itself?

2nd person is where the camera is fixed in a position. The camera constantly points toward the PC (player charecter )--like in the Van Helising game thingee. The camera's position changes for each room the player enters, like this (slashes depict where the camera is ponting)

Make sense?

Ah BUT: In third person, the camera follows a set distance behind the player. (SET CAMERA TO FOLLOW) In second person, you position the camera at a set point and use POINT CAMERA x,y,z with the player position as x,y,z. You reposition the camera fro each new room/section you enter.

the main difference is that 2nd person is a hell of a lot harder to control than 3rd person

That may be a new definition of second person, but I've never heard of a 3rd person fixed camera being called 2nd person before.

1st person and 3rd person are two methods of narration-- ('I looekd up and He looked up)-- they are only used in the context of video games because viewing from someone's POV makes the nature of the story feel like a 1st person one, and the same with 3rd person. There is no 2nd person in graphical games. In narrative, the style would be (You look up)-- but there's no particular method of camera use that falls into that, unless, as I mentioned above, fixed camera 3rd person is now called 2nd person.

I actually want to try a 4th person game... where its just a person sitting in a car or something telling you what happened:

"You started a new game"
"You wait for some loading... atleast thats what I heard from the 3rd person, but he's a liar, so I don't know if you have"
"you step up, no wait left.... the 5th person said left, the 3rd person said up... I couldn't see from where I was.... in the pub"

Sigs blow.

I prefer 1st person - I like to escape the drudgery of everyday life and become someone who has a minigun with unlimited ammo . 2nd person is good because it gives you that feeling of security cameras everywhere - while I still liked Resident Evil 4, I loved the other RE games when you had to rely on one camera position (yet, it was REALLY annoying when you were in a corner that the camera couldn't see, and you were being surrounded by zombies).

Last night I was looking up at the stars and said "Where the hell is my roof?!"

I suppose it depends on the type of game you're playing.

-- TO CLEAR UP ALL CONFUSION ABOUT 2ND PERSON --

The name convention of views comes from that of books, in that in a first person book, you are told the story through a character's eyes. In third person, you are told the story from an external view, in a kind of god-like view. Now, second person is when YOU are the character. A good example is those Choose-your-own-adventure books, when it say "You walk down the street. You beat up an old woman".

To take these terms to games, in first person you control the character from its viewpoint, in third person you control the character from an external viewpoint, and in a second person game (of which i don't think exist), the game controls you

Which brings about the really scary part: Jimmy was right

what if the first person poked the 2nd person in the eye and the 2nd person fell over the third while the forth had a beer all in a bar room brawl.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself
