Inspector McCrane picked his way carefully across the shards of glass littering the floor of the room they were in, and looked out the window.
“So, this is the room that Mr. Stineworth and his wife were arguing in? And this is the window that Mrs. Stineworth allegedly fell through?”
“Yes sir”, Private Investigator Albert Alliport answered. “At least, as far as we can figure out. The maid was in the kitchen, right below us, and heard angry yelling and footsteps above her head. Of course, this is the window Mrs. Stineworth fell out of.”
“The reason for the argument?”
“It appears, sir, that it was an argument concerning Mr Stineworth’s drinking habits. He had come home drunk, and Mrs. Stineworth was remonstrating with him on the subject when the maid brought up the clean towels to the bathroom, about ten minutes before she heard the yelling escalate, than a crash of glass. Mr. Stineworth insists that she tripped and fell through the window, without any help from him.”
“How trustworthy is the maid, in your estimation?”
“Fairly trustworthy, sir. She came very well recommended. We’ve checked out all of her references, and they are all valid. So far, we can find no motive for her to lie, excepting perhaps for Mr. Stineworth, whom she so far has done her best to incriminate. So far, we’ve been unable to find a single clue to disprove Mr. Stineworth’s statements.”
“I think, Albert, the clue you are looking for is right under your nose.”
What is the inspector talking about?
(note: typos have nothing to do with it. it is a simple answer)
ermes: "I'e no way to be understanded."
Me: No kidding.
