I don't think there are any downloadable good fps's...but i do recommend:

- Doom3
- Halflife 2
- Counterstrike source that comes with HL2 (The best FPS)
- Republic Commando
- Farcry

I recently bought Unreal Tournament for £2.99 at Game Station...Thats pretty good.

I would get UT2004 instead though, I heard its better.

And all the FPS's DarkFlame listed, HL2 being my favourite out of those.

there arent that many free fps games but there are some.

*americas army
*wolfenstein: enemy territory
*cube
*death illustrated
*bzflag
*freedoom
*openquartz

Americas army and enemy territory are the only ones u can consider having great graphics.

I will post links later but im busy now. If u really want to know now , there is google.

If u have money, i recommend ut:2004. It is a great game and if u get bored of it, there are lots of mods. There are mods to make it like counter strike, there are racing mods, hovercraft mods, western style mods, ww2 mods and many more. My favorite one right now is frag-ops. I also think unwheel is cool but the bots are horrible and almost no one plays it online.

Hey I downloaded the Ememy territory game and it wont let me connect to an online game, in fact it wont refresh the lobby so there are no games to play, any one know why?

Yeah same with RTCW.

I would agree ET is the best freeware FPS, unfortunately it is not nearly as good as RTCW IMO even though it was supposed to be. Both are dying games though, however ET is much more alive than RTCW. BTW if you search online, you should be able to find a site with a list of servers for ET.

Most games are written in C/C++ either using OpenGL or DirectX or both. Also many games are starting to use Lua or some other scripting language for AI, constants, etc, and sometimes the entire game. But the engine itself is usually in C++.

Quake 2...no its not free but its nice and cheap these days.
As is the halflife series...well relativly cheap anyway.
Download some demos and have a go if you like em, get em !

p.s. Oh max payne 1 is fantastic aswell

If you buy Half-Life 2, you get the new Counterstrike as well as all the old games free. (Half-Life, Day of Defeat, etc)

No you dont. I dont have any such version of Half-Life 2 and I can play all of them for free. But there are a few more games you get free with the gold edition, cant remember which ones though.

Ha! I thought that would be true but once HL2 came out EB jacked up the price of the original HL collection (with Blue Shift, CS, OpFor, TFC, etc.) since they figured that everyone would but it now that the sequel was out and it'd be market down.

I've been playing Day of Defeat recently, that's an awesome game. Just get the HalfLife Platinum Pack or a copy of HalfLife 2 that comes with all the old games.

Americas Army is pretty cool, it's a tough game though because some of the players out there have it totally sussed - personally I like to challenge my brothers in a LAN game more than playing online, but that's maybe just 'cos I suck at it.

Medal of Honour would be dirt cheap, and is still a very popular online game, if you don't have it then it's a good option for online play, and it does'nt mind being installed on extra PC's for LAN play (single player only works on 1 PC though). CounterStrike does'nt work for me since the inclusion of Steam, but shelling out for HL2 and CS:Source is something you should do as soon as you have some spends, CS:Source is awesome and you'd still have HL2 for single player.

Speaking of which, Doom3 is out for XBox now, gotta love co-op Doom3!.

Good downloadable FPS games?

Lonewolf and Mercanaries 2 will be out soon

If you're willing to pay, I liked Codename: Outbreak alot and that should be really cheap now and not too harsh on system specs like new games like Battlefield Vietnam etc...

Well.. Cube is good for maybe 15 minutes of un, but after that it gets boing.. Same for Death Illstruted. My favorite right now it Soldat--it's not a fps (it's 2d) but it sure plays like one! http://www.soldat.prv.pl There is NEVER a problem of finding a good server, when you search about 140 servers come up... by applying filters like CTF, Not Full Not Empty you can get that number down to 15 or so. The learning curve is steep however, this isn't a game like UT where you grab a Flak Cannon and go. It's taken me 2 years to get "pro." In the beggining the bots can beat you pretty badly, even on "stupid." Now I can pwn them on "Impossible" no sweat. It gives you a great sense of accomplishment, but if you spoiled and want great graphics and a pickup-shootup mentality I say go with Unreal Tournament. It's not free, but you can pick up a copy for around $10-20.

bzflag is good and there is always people playing it. The graphics are horrible though. It is a small download too.

And like the other person said cube is fun for a little while but almost noone plays it online and when u do all the player models are the same. but it is also a small download.

Freedoom is a small download too. It is a remake of all the content for doom and they are releasing it for free.

spear rewssurection is also a small download. IT is a game ased on wolfenstein3d, which means really old looking graphics. But ti is fun.
