well, are you trying to make a 3D or 2D game? If it's 3D, to tell you the truth, i can't do 3D games for crap. But i do have much experience with 2D games

You could start off by creating a backround image in any image editor (i just use ms paint) Create the image to suit your theme and your story-line. (I could help with these as well). For me to help you with anything visual, however, i would need to know the setting of the game and the story(maybe the story. probably not though) then you would make the character. (i may have much experience with 2d, but you'll need to ask someone else how to make the character move if you don't already know)

make a pong game

pong games are great to start with for the following reasons:
you can make it in 3d or 2d
gives you experience with coordinates, collision, etc
simple AI
controls
scoring
and alot more....
give it a try

Heres a quick idea of how you should start IMO.

1. Tetris
2. Pong
3. Pac Man
4. Bounce Out (That thing where you shoot coloured balls at other coloured balls and if they're the same then the coloured balls fall)
5. Split Screen Tag
6. Online Tag
7. Text MUD
8. Chat
9. FPS
10. Racing Game

When you've finished all of that you'll be very fluent with the dark basic language and how everything works and should be able to create a dandy game. The first 4 can be done in 2D or 3D and are fairly simple, but increase in difficulty as they go further down, good starter-offers. From 5-8 you'll start learning about online handling and the fundementals of how transferring data over the internet to other computers works. 9 Will introduce projectiles and an even greater idea of AI and will involve the use of many variables so you'll become a pro at managing variables/arrays. And 10 will give you a good approach to physics like sliding with higher speed, velocity, different types of collision etc. After 10 the sky is the limit, you should be able to make quite a good game after that.
