Not a single person said it was successful. A friendly flush could have just been to keep him amused.

Its weird, finally having a different one. I think it's true to say well over most of the people here have only known one Pope.

Facts are meaningless.
You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true.

I was 6 when JP II started his time, and I don't remember any others.

Let's hope our mew Pope is as successful and influential as his predecessor.

It certainly shows how quickly the world changes. We now have a German Pope, following in the footsteps of a Polish one. 60 years ago, their nations were the centrepoint of a World War.

And by the looks of things we'll have another new pope in a few years anyway.

Why? He doesn't look that old.

And which prophecy is that?

Personally I'm looking forward to a north american pope, if ever there will be one

Think he's 78. Not exactly fresh as a daisy.

Only prophecy I know about is that document they have. Some bloke wrote down all the popes from the one at the time until some point in the future. He gave them all a made up name, then said something about them. Apparently each pope matches their version he wrote pretty well. Unfortuantly there is only supposed to be 2 after JP2. I'd be bit twitchy if I believed that sort of thing.

Oh, and some one in work today said that the pope is supposed to live as long as God has a use for him. Once he has done the great things he is supposed to do, then see you later basically. If so then the new one better put the pedal to the metal. And that bloke who lasted only a single month before JP2 must have either done something really good really quickly (but behind the scenes) or *seriously* pissed off God Hmmm. If I was pope then I would pretend to be doing what God really wanted, but take my own damn time. Would last ages then. Bit like where I work...

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

@Coding Fodder: the right quote is "Viva il papa!"
I am Italian

Btw, the pope that last only one month in 1978 was John Paul I, Albino Luciani, and in fact he did a lot of things in only 33 days in charge, like a whole different approach to people and Pope's talking style and, most important of all, he was a great man!
JPII followed his style, basing his long period as Pope on human behaviour instead of a hieratical one, and he was a great man, too!

The new Pope Benedictus XVI seems a different kind of Pope, but he also has a great culture and wisdom and wrote lot of books.
His first quote as Pope touched me for his humility:
"dopo il grande Papa Giovanni Paolo II, i Signori Cardinali hanno eletto me, un semplice e umile lavoratore nella vigna del Signore"
I translate it for you:
"after the great Pope John Paul II, the Cardinals elected me, a simple and humble worker in God's vineyard"
