If you use a sprite, the default colour which it thinks is transparent is black. Is there anyway to change this?

Depends on whether or not you are using DB Classic or DBpro.

DBC the default transparent color cannot be changed

In DBpro you would use the Set Image Colorkey command.

SET IMAGE COLORKEY red value, green value, blue value

where red, green, & blue value is an integer between 0-255
so to make bright pink your transparent color the values would be
255,0,255

I like using this as my transparent color; since it's quite ugly and would have a rare chance of being used in my images.
